Crochet Graduation Cap
Materials:
- 100% cotton yarn suitable for 2.00 to 3.00 mm crochet hooks (black and yellow suggested, but gray used in the video for clarity)
- Crochet hook (size 2.00 mm used in the video)
- Scissors
- Needle
- Lap marker or clip (optional)
- Ring with a chain for a keychain (optional)
- Clips to attach the keychain to the cap (optional)
Beginning to Pattern:
Creating the Square Piece:
- Start with a slip knot using gray yarn (or your chosen color) and chain 13.
- Skip the first chain from the hook. In the second chain, start crocheting a single crochet in each chain until the end, making 12 single crochets total for this row.
- Hide the thread left from the slip knot by weaving it in as you crochet, then cut the excess.
For rows 2 to 11:
- Crochet a single crochet in each stitch, then chain 1 and turn your piece. This makes a total of 11 rows of 12 single crochets each.
- Crochet a chain. For the edge, crochet 12 single crochets along each side of the square, resulting in 48 stitches around.
- After completing the edges, secure with a slip stitch and a chain. Cut the thread, slide, and tighten. Weave in this end with a needle and cut the excess. This completes the square piece.
Creating the Top (Circular Piece):
- Make a magic ring and crochet six single crochets into it.
For round 2:
- Make an increase in each stitch, ending with 12 stitches.
Round 3:
- Alternate between one single crochet and one increase; you'll have 18 stitches total.
For Round 4:
- Do two single crochets, then an increase, ending with 24 stitches.
Round 5:
- Crochet in the back loop only, making one single crochet in each for a total of 24 stitches.
Rounds 6 to 8:
- Crochet one single crochet in each stitch normally, ending each round with 24 stitches.
- Finish with a slip stitch and a chain, then cut and secure the thread. Also, finish off the magic circle's starting thread.
Creating the Tassel:
- Wrap yellow yarn around your index and middle finger 15 times. Cut the yarn.
- Thread a piece of yarn through the loops to secure the top of the tassel and tie a knot.
- Wrap yarn around the tassel near the top, secure with a knot, and thread the end through the center of the tassel and out the top. Tie a knot and cut the excess.
- Trim the bottom of the tassel to even out the strands.
Assembly:
- Attach the tassel to the square piece by threading the tassel's top through the center of rows 7 and 8 of the square, securing it on the other side, and trimming the excess thread.
- Join the circular piece to the square piece by aligning it in the center of the square piece and sewing them together using the threads from both pieces. Hide the ends between the two pieces.
- Optionally, attach a keychain ring to the cap using a chain.
Finishing Touches:
- The creator suggests two locations for attaching the keychain ring: one at a corner of the square piece and another at the center where the tassel is attached.
- Reminders to hide all loose ends neatly for a finished look.
