-*Materials:

  • Worsted weight yarn
  • 4.5 mm crochet hook (for the brim)
  • 5 mm crochet hook (for the body and crown)

Pattern:

Brim:

  • With the smaller hook (4.5 mm), make a slip knot.
  • Chain a multiple of 4 to fit the head circumference (e.g., 72 chains for teen/adult size).
  • Join with a slip stitch to the first chain to form a circle, being careful not to twist the chain.
  • Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet).
  • Double crochet in the second chain from the hook and each chain around.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the top of the starting chain 3.

3 Save

Round 2 - Brim:

  • Start with a back post single crochet around the first stitch, chain 2 (counts as a back post double crochet).
  • Make a back post double crochet around the next stitch.
  • Skip one stitch, then work a front post double crochet around the following stitch.
  • Go back and work a front post double crochet around the skipped stitch.
  • Make back post double crochets around the next two stitches.
  • Repeat this sequence of four stitches around.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the second chain at the beginning of the round.
  • Repeat round 2 until the brim reaches your desired height, joining each round with a slip stitch.

Body:

  • Switch to the larger hook (5 mm).
  • Continue with the back post single crochet and chain 2 (counts as a back post double crochet).
  • Make a back post double crochet around the next back post.
  • Create a front post puff stitch around the next front post double crochet: yarn over, insert the hook around the post, yarn over, pull up a loop, (repeat), yarn over, pull through all but the last loop, yarn over, pull through the last two loops.
  • Repeat the front post puff stitch around the next front post double crochet.
  • Continue this pattern of two back post double crochets and two front post puff stitches around.
  • Continue repeating this pattern for the body of the hat until you reach the desired height before the crown.

4 Save

Crown (Decrease Rounds):

  • Start the decrease by making a back post double crochet decrease across two stitches.
  • Chain 2 (counts as the first decrease back post double crochet).
  • Work front post puff stitches around each of the next two front post puff stitches.
  • Continue the decrease pattern by decreasing the back post stitches and maintaining the front post puff stitches.

5 Save

Final Decrease Rounds:

  • Combine two front post puff stitches.
  • Continue decreasing stitches as described in the video until the opening for the crown closes.
  • When only a small hole remains, cut the yarn, leave a long tail, and weave the tail through the front loops of all stitches in the last round.
  • Pull the yarn tightly to close the hole securely and weave in the ends.
