Starting the Beanie

Create a Slip Knot:

  • Begin with a slip knot on your hook.

Chain to Head Circumference:

  • Make a chain long enough to stretch around your head.
  • For reference, 75 chains were used, which stretched to about 21-22 inches.
  • Adjust the number of chains according to the thickness of your yarn and the size of your head.

Join Chain in Round:

  • Ensure the chain is not twisted, and join it in the round using a slip stitch into the first chain.

Working in Rounds

Round 1:

Back Loop Only:

  • Work in the back loops of the chain. Find the back bump of each chain loop to create a firmer edge.

Double Crochets:

  • Make one double crochet in each chain around.
  • Insert your hook starting from the first chain’s back bump, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, and pull through two loops.

Join:

  • Slip stitch in the first double crochet to join the round.

Round 2 and Beyond:

  • Repeat Round 1 until the beanie covers the desired portion of your head. Usually, 14 rounds create a length of about 7 inches.

Closing the Top

Thread Top Loops:

  • Using a yarn needle, weave the yarn through the top loops of each stitch around the last row.

Pull to Tighten:

  • Pull the yarn to gather the top and close the hole. Secure with a knot and weave in the ends.

Ear Flaps

Placement:

  • Determine the placement of ear flaps. Count stitches from the back seam to ensure symmetry.

Create Flaps:

  • At the stitch marker, begin the ear flap.
  • Chain one and start making double crochets across the marked stitches for the flap.
  • Decrease at the start and end of each row until the flap is about 3-4 inches long.

Shape Flap:

  • Decrease every few stitches by pulling through all loops on the hook to taper the ear flap.

Finish Flap:

  • Fasten off and weave in ends.

Braids

  • Fold in half and thread through the bottom of the ear flaps.

Braid:

  • Divide the strands into three parts and braid to the desired length.

Secure the Braid:

  • Tie a knot at the end of the braid and trim the excess.

Finish

Add a Pom Pom:

  • Attach a pom pom to the top of the beanie.
