Simple Knit Spine Stitch
The alternating twists make each stitch a small victory, perfect for those who appreciate texture and detail in their handiwork. So, why not pick up your needles and give the Spine Stitch a go? Your yarn will transform into a beautifully textured creation with each pass.
Materials Needed:
- Yarn of your choice (either medium weight or fingering weight as per your preference)
- Knitting needles (size as recommended for the yarn or a slightly larger size for a looser, more open fabric)
Pattern Instructions:
Cast on a multiple of 4 stitches plus 2 extra stitches. (For example, (4 x 3) + 2 = 14 stitches)
- Row 1 (Wrong Side): Purl all stitches across.
- Row 2 (Right Side):
- Knit the first stitch.
- Begin pattern repeat between the asterisks.
Pattern Repeat:
Cross 2 Left Knit (C2LK):
- Insert the right knitting needle into the back loop of the second stitch as if to knit, knit this stitch but do not drop it from the left needle.
- Then, knit into the back loop of the first stitch (the stitch closer to the tip of the left needle), and then drop both the first and second stitches from the left needle together.
Cross 2 Right Knit (C2RK):
- Insert the right needle into the front loop of the second stitch as if to knit, knit this stitch but do not drop it from the left needle.
- Then, knit into the front loop of the first stitch, then drop both stitches from the left needle together.
End pattern repeat.
- Knit the last stitch.
Continue these two rows to form the Spine Stitch pattern.
Finishing:
- Once you've reached the desired length, bind off your work in the standard manner.
- The fabric may curl slightly at the top and bottom, so blocking is recommended to help your work lay flat.
