Knit Ear Warmer
Materials Needed:
- 22 needle knitting machine
- Yarn Inspirations Karen's Simply Soft Yarn in colors Pagoda and White
- Contrast color waste yarn for cast on/off
- Scissors
- Crochet hook
- Stitch markers (optional)
- Tapestry needle
Instructions:
Prepare the Machine:
- Set up your 22 needle machine.
- Cast on with waste yarn using the drawstring cast-on method, knitting seven rows of waste yarn.
Knit the Tubes:
- Set your row counter to zero and using your main color yarn, start knitting the first tube.
- Knit 90 rows with the first color (Pagoda).
- Check the project as it grows to prevent it from bunching up by lifting it and setting it on top of previous work as needed.
- Once 90 rows are completed, switch to the waste yarn again and knit seven rows.
- Remove the first tube from the machine by rotating the machine twice to release the tube.
Repeat: 0
- Repeat the same process for the second tube using the second color (White).
Closing the Tubes:
- Identify the beginning and end of your project; the end will unravel more easily.
- Use stitch markers to mark the last loops of the beginning and end of the waist yarn on both sides of the tube.
- Secure stitch markers in the 12th loop on both sides, counting from the edges.
Braiding and Joining:
- Drop every other stitch starting from the second loop on both sides. Use the crochet hook to help start this process.
- Braid the tubes together making sure to pick up every loop without missing any to prevent the stitches from dropping unintentionally.
- Continue braiding until the last few bars, making sure each pair of loops correctly unravels together.
Finishing the Join:
- Once braided to the end, use the tail end of the yarn to secure the last stitch and weave in the end to prevent it from unraveling.
Securing Edges:
- Align the ends of the braid, sew together using a piece of yarn and a tapestry needle, essentially sandwiching the four ends together.
- Knot off and weave in all the ends to hide tails and secure the join.
Final Touches:
- Even out the edges and push up the corner of the braid to make it more prominent.
