Knit Market Bag
With just a few basic stitches, you'll soon have a creation that's not only useful but also a testament to your knitting skills. So, grab your needles and yarn, and let's get started on making a market bag that's all set to become your go-to carryall!
Materials Needed:
- 100% cotton yarn (Bernat Handicrafter recommended, 3 balls of 50g & 84 yards)
- 6mm circular knitting needles (30-inch wire)
- Scissors
- A crochet hook smaller than 6mm
- Stitch marker
Preparation:
Cast on 32 stitches using the long-tail cast-on method.
- Leave about a 70cm tail.
- Make a slip knot and insert the needle.
- Cast on 31 more stitches, counting the slip knot as the first stitch.
Beginning:
- Knit 4 rows in a garter stitch pattern (knit every stitch).
Main Pattern:
- Row 1: Knit 2, then yarn over twice, knit 2. Repeat this sequence to the end of the row. You should have 62 stitches.
- Row 2 (Wrong Side): Purl 2, knit the first yarn over, purl the second one, and purl 2. Repeat to the end.
- Row 3: Knit 1, yarn over, slip one stitch as if to knit, knit one, pass the slipped stitch over the knitted one, knit two together, then yarn over twice. Repeat to the end.
- Row 4 (Wrong Side): Purling the purl stitches and treating the yarn overs as described in row 2.
- Row 5: Return to the sequence from row 1.
Repeat these rows (following the chart as described in the video), creating a row of large holes, and keep repeating until you have 40 such rows.
Finish the Body of the Bag:
Knit 4 rows in the garter stitch again, but begin the first row with a decrease (knit two stitches together) to return to 32 stitches.
Cast off all stitches.
Handles:
- Attach yarn to the garter stitch part of the bag and pick up 22 stitches along the edge.
- Cast on an additional 30 stitches using a single cast-on method for the handle.
- Using these 54 stitches, work 4 rows using the magic loop method (2 purl rows, 2 knit rows).
- Cast off all stitches purlwise.
- Repeat a similar technique for the second handle.
Completing the Bag:
- Weave in all ends using a crochet hook or tapestry needle.
- Cut the tails, and be careful not to cut too close to your work.
Final Notes:
- Remember to work from the wrong side when weaving in ends for a cleaner finish.
- Throughout the pattern, ensure that your stitches are not too tight.
