Knit Hand Warmer Pattern
Materials:
- Approximately 68 grams (or 180 yards) of DK/light worsted weight yarn
- 4mm circular knitting needles
- A tapestry needle
- Scissors
Instructions:
Slip Knot & Cast On:
- Make a slip knot and place it on your needle.
- For the cast on, hold the tail end and working yarn like a diamond shape and cast on stitches using the long tail method.
Knit Stitch:
- Knit across the row by inserting the right needle from left to right through the front loop of the first stitch and throw the yarn around the right needle. Pull through the loop and slide the old stitch off the left needle.
Purl Stitch:
Purl across the next row by inserting the right needle from right to left through the front loop of the first stitch, from the front to the back, then throw the yarn around the right needle, scoop it out from the back, and slide the old stitch off the left needle.
Stockinette Stitch Panel:
- Work the piece in stockinette stitch (knit one row, purl the next) back and forth on circular needles without joining in the round.
- Keep knitting until the piece measures around 13 inches or as needed to wrap comfortably around your arm.
Measuring:
- Try the panel on your arm periodically to ensure a proper fit.
Casting Off:
Knit two stitches, then pass the first stitch over the second and off the needle. Repeat until all stitches are cast off, making sure not to pull too tightly.
Seaming:
- Leave a long tail after casting off to seam the hand warmer.
- Block your panel before seaming to make the stitches more visible (optional).
- Use the vertical invisible seam technique to seam up the sides, leaving a gap for the thumb.
- Use a tapestry needle to weave the yarn under the horizontal bars on the inside of the hand warmer.
Finish:
- Weave in any loose ends to secure, and your hand warmer is complete.
Remember that while knitting, you may need to make adjustments to the number of stitches cast on and the length of the panel based on the size of your arm and your gauge. Always try on the piece as you progress to ensure a comfortable fit. Enjoy your new hand warmers!
