Knit Brioche Rib Hat Pattern
Materials Needed:
- DK weight yarn (Recommend "Originally Lovely Pura" 100% non-superwash merino wool)
- Two colors of yarn: Main color and Accent color
- US Size 6 (4 mm) 16-inch circular knitting needles for the main hat
- US Size 8 (5 mm) knitting needles for the cast-on edge
Cast-On and Setup:
- Begin with a Tubular Cast-On using size 8 needles for a stretchy edge.
- Make a slip knot and place it on your size 8 needle. The slip knot will count as a knit stitch, so next, you will pair it with a purl stitch.
- Use a technique that involves going over and under the strands, ensuring a knit and a purl stitch are alternated on the needle.
- Cast on the number of stitches needed for your hat size, then work a few setup rows to create the tubular edge.
Brioche Knit Setup Row:
- With the size 6 needle and starting with the accent color, perform the setup for the brioche knit. This involves knitting one stitch, bringing the yarn to the front, and slipping the next stitch purlwise.
- Every slipped stitch will be paired with a yarn-over in the brioche pattern.
Joining in the Round:
- After casting on the appropriate number of stitches, join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
- Add a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
Brioche Pattern:
- Work a brioche knit round with the main color.
- The stitch pattern involves a yarn over to pair with a slipped purl stitch and a brioche knit (BRK) for a knit stitch.
- Alternate rounds between the main color and accent color. The main color will be used for brioche knit rounds (BRK), and the accent color for brioche purl rounds (BRP).
Crown Decreases:
- Start the decreases after the hat measures about 10 inches from the cast-on edge.
- Use stitch markers to demarcate the decrease points and perform right leaning and left leaning decreases.
- Continue with the established brioche pattern while incorporating these decreases.
Finishing:
- End with a three-needle bind off for a seamless join at the top of the hat.
- Weave in ends and block the hat to the desired shape.
