Crochet Christmas Snowflake Ornament
Materials Required:
- Yarn: Premier Cotton Fair yarn (52% cotton, 48% acrylic, Number Two Fine yarn). However, any Number Two size yarn, including 100% acrylic, can also work well.
- Crochet Hook: 3.5 mm (size may be adjusted based on your crochet tension).
Starting the Snowflake:
Magic Ring Start:
- Make a magic ring, or use any ring start you're comfortable with.
- Chain 2 (this counts as the first partial extended double crochet).
First Round:
- Extended Double Crochet Two Together (EDC2tog)
- Yarn over, insert your hook into the ring, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through one loop, then yarn over and pull through two loops (first partial extended double crochet made).
- Repeat the previous step for the second partial extended double crochet.
- Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook to complete the stitch.
- Chain 3.
- Repeat the steps to create 6 petals in total, joined by chain 3 spaces between each.
Second Round:
- Slip stitch into the first chain space to position your yarn.
- In each chain space: make 3 single crochets, chain 3, and then 3 more single crochets.
- Repeat this pattern for each of the six chain spaces from the first round.
Third Round (Creating the Snowflake Shape):
- In each chain space formed by the previous round, work 3 double crochets, chain 3, and 3 double crochets.
- Chain one before moving to the next chain space.
- Repeat this pattern around.
Fourth Round (Borders and Shape Definition):
- Begin with a chain 2 to represent the first half double crochet.
- For each set of stitches from the previous round: Work 1 half double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches, then in the chain space, work 2 half double crochets, chain 2, and 2 more half double crochets.
Continue with 1 half double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches and remember to skip the chain one space between the sets.
- Repeat this pattern around.
Edging:
- Slip stitch around the entire edge of the snowflake for a neat finish.
- When you reach a corner, slip stitch into the chain space, then work an additional slip stitch around the corner before proceeding to slip stitch into the chain space again on the other side of the corner.
- Skip any stitches that are too tight or difficult to access, focusing on creating a smooth, decorative edge.
Finishing Touches:
- Finish off by cutting the yarn, pulling it through the loop, and weaving in the ends with a yarn needle for a clean look.
- You can create a hanging loop by attaching a yarn through any of the points of the snowflake.
