Here are the key points from the video on how to knit the checkerboard pattern:

  • Cast on a number of stitches that is a multiple of 8 + 4 stitches for symmetry and 2 edge stitches.
  • The stitch pattern repeat is 8 stitches wide and 12 rows high.
  • Knit the first row by knitting 4 stitches, purling 4 stitches, repeat this for the entire row, and end with a knit stitch.
  • Row 2: Purl 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, purl 2 stitches, knit 1 stitch (these are the symmetry stitches), knit 4 stitches, purl 1 stitch, knit 2 stitches, knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch (end row).
  • Repeat rows 1 and 2 until you reach the desired length.
  • Shift the pattern in row 7 by knitting the first 4 stitches instead of purling them.

Repeat rows 7 through 12 to complete the pattern.

Ideas for Using the Pattern

You can make trendy sweaters, vests, cardigans, and more with this checkerboard knitting pattern! It's perfect for clothing for both adults and kids. For example, a cute cardigan for children can be made using this pattern because it has a nice texture that's cozy and keeps the chill out, even though it looks simple. It's a bit tricky at the beginning but is quick to make and fits nicely.

Other Ideas:

Why not knit a stylish cardigan for a dad, brother, grandpa or a special guy in your life? Choose a cool color like chic brown, navy, or space gray. Add a few buttons or pockets just for fun! They will absolutely love it.

This pattern is also great for making snug accessories like hats and headbands. Make sure you're comfortable with this stitch before tackling bigger projects.
