Knit fingerless mittens are the perfect project for anyone looking to keep their hands warm while still being able to text, type, or hold a hot cup of coffee. Making these cozy accessories can be simple and fun, even for beginners. With a bit of yarn, some basic knitting know-how, and a touch of patience, you can whip up a pair of these stylish mittens.
Knit Fingerless Mittens
Materials:
- Loops and Threads Heathered Tweed yarn in Mero and Gray Blush colors
- Caron Simply Soft in White color
- A 46 needle Addie machine or a 48 needle Central machine
Cuff (Solid or Striped):
- Align the black/white needles to the yarn feeder and select a contrast color waste yarn.
- Use a drawstring cast-on: alternate in front of and behind the needles all the way around without tension.
- Knit 7 rows with the waste yarn (or as many as you're comfortable with).
- Set the row counter to zero.
- Change to Gray Blush yarn and knit 12 rows for the cuff (for striped cuff variation: 4 rows Gray Blush, 2 rows White, 4 rows Gray Blush, 2 rows White).
Mitten Body:
- Change to the Mero yarn and knit 4 rows.
- Change to the White yarn and knit 2 rows.
- Repeat the above two steps once more (4 rows Gray Blush, 2 rows White, 4 rows Mero, 2 rows White).
- Knit another section identical to step 8 (4 rows Mero, 2 rows White, 4 rows Gray Blush, 2 rows White).
- Finish with 4 more rows in Mero (up to row 40).
Closure:
- Switch to waste yarn without worrying about tension, and knit a few more rows to secure the stitches.
- Use a flat edge technique, such as a braided close, with a crochet hook for the bind-off. Do not use a Kitchener Stitch here.
- Once complete, remove the project from the machine carefully, helping the last loops if necessary.
Finishing:
- Stretch the mitten out in every direction.
- Sew up the project sides to create the fingerless mitten shape, ensuring you leave space for the thumbhole at the appropriate row (this may require trying on the mitten).
- Use the invisible seam method to sew the sides together for a stretchy fit over the wrist.
- Sew the second mitten following the same steps to create a matching pair.
Matching Accessories:
- Consider making a matching four-point closure ear warmer as described at the beginning of the video.
