Materials:

  • 22 pin circular knitting machine
  • Aran weight yarn in black, white, green or blue, and cream. Additional red color yarn and dark (DK) red yarn for detailing
  • Stuffing material
  • I-Cord maker (optional)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Long tweezers (for stuffing fingers)
  • Glove (leather or leatherette preferred over knitted for stretch reasons)
  • Six 30cm lengths of fuzzy or standard bendy wire
  • Sewing needle and thread or hot glue
  • Plastic milk carton (for DIY nails) or false nails
  • Red nail polish (for a gory effect)

1

Eyeball Pattern:

Start Knitting:

  • Cast on the black yarn on your circular knitting machine, knitting three rows.

Iris Layer:

  • Change to your chosen iris color (green/blue), knit another three rows.

Sclera (White Part):

  • Swap to white yarn, knit 32 rows.

2

Completing Iris & Pupil:

  • Switch back to the iris color, knit three rows, then change back to black, finishing with three more rows. This takes you to 44 rows total.

Cast Off & Assembly:

  • Use a long tail to cast off.
  • Turn your work inside out, ensuring color joints are secured.
  • Use the tapestry needle to draw the opening closed at both the cast-on and cast-off ends, adjusting to form the eyeball shape and securing with knots. Ensure to stuff it before completely sealing.

Detailing:

  • Using white yarn, add vein detailing with darning stitches in a zig-zag pattern for realism.
  • Add a highlight to the iris by stitching a small white patch.

Creating the Hand:

Prepare Glove:

  • Insert 30cm lengths of bendy wire into each finger of the glove to act as finger bones, allowing adjustability.

Stuffing:

  • Stuff the tips of the glove fingers first to cushion the wire ends.
  • Continue stuffing around the wire to fill out the glove, simulating a hand shape.

Seal and Detail:

  • Craft a bony wrist part by knitting a small patch (3 cream, 8 red, 3 cream), cinching at both ends, and securing it to the open end of the glove.
  • Enhance realism with hot glue or sewing, attaching the crafted bone piece.

3

Fingernails:

  • Cut nail shapes from a plastic milk carton or use false nails. Affix to fingertips with hot glue or another strong adhesive. Paint with red nail polish for a gruesome appearance.

Attaching the Eyeball:

4

Positioning:

  • Decide on the placement atop the hand, preferably near the fingers for a looming effect.

Attachment:

  • Use hot glue or sew the eyeball securely onto the hand.

Optional Details:

  • Add veins to the eyeball using DK red yarn for a veined look.
  • Create optic nerves using the I-Cord maker with DK yarn, attaching them to the back of the eyeball.
