Crocheting a men's beanie is both a fun and rewarding activity. Picture this: You're sitting comfortably with your favorite yarn and crochet hook in hand, ready to turn simple stitches into a warm, stylish beanie. This project is perfect for those looking to make a thoughtful handmade gift or just aiming to add a custom touch to their wardrobe.
How To Crochet Men’s Beanie
Materials Needed:
- Double knit yarn (specifically Elise Batik 100 acrylic was used, 100 grams, 210 meters)
- 4mm crochet hook (though a range from 4mm to 6mm can be used depending on desired tightness)
- Wool needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
Pattern Instructions:
Starting The Crown:
- Begin with a slip knot on your hook.
- Chain 3 (counts as your first double crochet).
- Make 11 double crochets into the first chain. You should end up with a circle of 12 double crochets.
- Slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3 to close the circle.
Increasing Rounds:
Round 1:
- Chain up and make 2 double crochets in each stitch around. You'll have 24 stitches.
Round 2:
- 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in the next. Repeat around. You'll have 36 stitches.
After Round 3:
- 2 double crochets in the next stitch, 1 double crochet in each of the next two stitches. Repeat around. You'll have 48 stitches.
Round 4:
- Increase by adding one more stitch between increases. Continue this pattern until you have 6 rounds of increasing or more depending on the size needed.
Creating The Body:
Round after last increase:
- Double crochet in each stitch around without increasing.
- Measure the diameter of the circle. For the specific beanie in the tutorial, stop increasing at 17 cm in diameter which was after 6 rounds of increasing.
Ribbing Texture:
- Start the ribbing by alternating front post and back post double crochet stitches around the beanie.
First Round of Ribbing:
- Chain 2, Front Post Double Crochet in the next stitch, Back Post Double Crochet in the next. Repeat from to around.
- Slip stitch to join the end of the round and chain 2 to start the next round.
- Continue altering front post and back post double crochets for each round until the beanie reaches the desired length.
- About 16 rounds were suggested for a snug fit that covers the ears effectively.
Finishing:
- To finish the beanie, simply slip stitch to close the final round, cut the yarn, and weave in the ends neatly.
Additional Tips:
- For a larger head, keep increasing the diameter by maintaining the pattern increase ratio before starting the ribbing.
- You have the option to delay the ribbing part until later in the project, making a longer section of just double crochet stitches for a different style.
