Colorful Crochet Granny Square Top Pattern
Materials Needed
- Cotton yarn (The example uses 5 colors, but the number of colors is up to you)
- Crochet hook (size not mentioned, select based on your yarn's recommendation)
Granny Square (Make 4)
Starting with a magic ring:
- Chain 2 (this counts as your first double crochet).
- Make 2 double crochets into the ring.
- Chain 2 to form the first corner.
- Make 3 double crochets, chain 2, and repeat twice more to form a square.
- Slip stitch to the top of the initial chain to close the square.
- Cut off the yarn.
For the second round and beyond:
- Attach a new color yarn at any corner.
- Chain 2 (counts as the first double crochet), then make 2 more double crochets in the same space.
- In each corner: Make 3 double crochets, chain 2, and 3 more double crochets.
- Repeat around, and slip stitch to close the round.
Repeat these steps, increasing the size of the square until it measures approximately one-fourth of your bust measurement (since the top consists of four squares).
Triangle (Make 4)
Start with a magic ring:
- Chain 2, then make 3 double crochets, chain 2, and 4 more double crochets into the ring.
- Close the magic ring and turn.
Building the triangle:
- Attach a new color if desired. In the space before the first double crochet of the previous row, attach yarn, chain 2, then make 3 double crochets in the same space.
- For corners: Make 3 double crochets, chain 2, and 3 more double crochets.
- Repeat the pattern, creating a triangle shape by increasing at every corner.
Joining
- Squares: Join the squares by slip stitching the corners and sides together, working through both layers.
- Triangles: Attach the triangles under each arm and at the neckline with slip stitches for a seamless look.
Border and Straps
- Single Crochet Border: Work a single crochet border around the entire piece, hiding any loose ends as you go. Use 2 single crochets for each double crochet space to keep the border flat.
- Ruffled Border: For a decorative edge, add a ruffle by working two double crochets in each single crochet around the hem.
- Straps: Chain 55 (or desired length) for each strap. Attach the chains at the top corners of the front piece, then work half double crochets back across the chain to thicken the straps. Attach ends to the back of the top.
- Finishing: Secure all ends and trim any excess yarn.
Feel free to customize the size of your granny squares and triangles, as well as the number of rounds in each, to best fit your measurements. Enjoy your crocheted crop top with a ruffle border!
