Knit Checkered Criss Cross Braided Scarf
Materials:
- 22 Needle knitting machine
- Loops and Threads Flex Yarn in Amethyst and Sweet Cream (or colors of your choice)
Instructions:
- On your 22 needle knitting machine, start with the Sweet Cream yarn.
- Bring your first black needle in line with your yarn guide.
- Perform a drawring cast on: Pass the yarn in front of the first black needle, then behind the next, in front and behind all the way around, loosely.
- Set the row counter to zero.
- Knit the first row (Caston row) loose, as it's not included in the row counts.
- Start the second row (first row of the project) slowly to ensure the yarn drops down and makes a loop over the red teeth.
- Hold the yarn with light tension and knit for 65 rows.
- Cut off the yarn tail, adding the second color (Amethyst) for a jogless join using the technique described in the video transcript.
- Continue knitting 65 rows with the Amethyst yarn, taking you to row 130.
- As the project lengthens, manage the tension by lifting the work from the table or letting it fall between the legs of your table onto the floor.
- Change color back to Sweet Cream at row 130, perform another jogless join, and knit 65 more rows.
- Repeat the color change and knit another 65 rows with Amethyst, taking you to row 260.
- As the project continues, repeat the steps: switch to Sweet Cream, knit 65 rows, then switch to Amethyst, and knit 65 rows. Make sure you perform jogless joins each time to keep the edges straight.
- Once you have five sections completed (starting and ending with Sweet Cream), you'll have 325 rows.
Casting Off:
- Begin the drawring cast off, ensuring to drop two rows for the braid on needles 11 and 12 as described.
- Rotate the knitting barrel, carefully removing the stitches until you reach the dropped stitches for your braid.
- Continue with the cast-off process until all stitches are removed.
Braiding and Assembly:
- With two panels created (starting one with Sweet Cream and the other with Amethyst), begin dropping a few rows on both pieces to prepare them for the braid.
- Use a crochet hook to interlock the bars from both pieces to create a braided effect. Alternate picking up three bars from each panel and threading them through the loop on the hook.
- After braiding the entire length, finish off by securing the ends with drawstrings and stitch markers as detailed in the video.
Adding Pom Poms:
- Use a Clover pom-pom maker (recommended size 65) to create pom poms.
- Wrap yarn around each half of the pom-pom maker until it's full.
- Cut through the yarn along the center groove, tie it tightly around the middle, then remove the pom-pom maker.
- Trim the pom-pom to shape, attach to the ends of the scarf, and secure in place.
Finishing:
- Weave in all loose ends.
- Cut any excess yarn tails.
- Ensure your scarf measures approximately 68 inches in length.
