To Start:

  • Chain 3 (counts as your first double crochet).

Round 1: Creating a Split Square:

  • Make 2 double crochet into the loop from the starting chain.
  • Chain 2.
  • Make another set of 3 double crochet into the loop, then chain 1 with your green yarn (or your first color).
  • Introduce your second color yarn, make a chain with the new color.
  • Make 3 double crochet, chain 2, and another 3 double crochet, then chain 2 again to complete the round.
  • Slip stitch into the top stitch of the first double crochet (not the chain 3).

Round 2:

  • Flip your work. Slip stitch, then chain up 3 for the first double crochet.
  • Since you're in a corner, make another double crochet for a total of 2.
  • Double crochet once into each stitch across the side (3 double crochet).
  • In the corner, do 2 double crochet, chain 2, and 2 more double crochet.
  • Change colors as shown previously at the next corner that requires it, following the same steps.

Subsequent Rounds:

  • Continue following the pattern of increasing by 4 double crochets on each side per round, making sure to flip your work at the start of each new round, and changing colors as necessary for the split square design.

Assembly of the Bag:

  • For each side of the bag, you need 8 half squares (4 of Color A and 4 of Color B for each panel). That means a total of 16 half squares to form the front and back sides.
  • Piece the squares together using a flat slip stitch seam method. Start with a slip knot and work only in the back loops for a flat seam appearance.

  • Assemble the squares in the Sawtooth star pattern or any quilting motif of your choice.

Making Handles:

  • Chain 130 (or until you reach the desired length for a strap about 32 inches long).
  • Attach the handles to the bag by evenly spacing 10 single crochets from the edge on either side of the top of the bag.
  • Mirror the handle placement on the other side.

Joining the Panels:

  • Place the two panels wrong sides together, attaching them by working through both panels around 3 sides with a slip stitch, leaving the top side open.
  • Work a row of single crochet around the top edge for a neat finish.

Final Details

  • Weave in all loose ends.

Optional:

  • Line the bag with fabric for a more finished look inside.
