Materials Needed:

  • Scissors
  • Crochet hook
  • Darning needle (or wool needle, sewing needle)
  • Tape measure
  • Yarn

Pattern Overview:

  • This beanie is worked up by crocheting a long rectangle using chunky yarn, which is then sewn or slip-stitched together to form a tube. The top of the tube is then cinched to form the top of the beanie. The pattern primarily uses half double crochet stitches in the back loop only to create a ridged texture.

Begin with a Slip Knot

  • Make a slip knot to start your crochet.

Chain Stitches

  • Chain enough stitches to measure around 10.5 to 11 inches long. For a chunkier beanie rim, aim for 11 inches.

First Row of Half Double Crochet:

  • Skip the first chain from the hook.
  • Yarn over, insert the hook into the second chain.
  • Yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on hook).
  • Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.
  • Continue this half double crochet in each chain across till the end of the row.

Second Row and Beyond:

  • Chain one and turn your work.
  • Stitch half double crochets into the back loop only of every stitch from the previous row.
  • This will create a ridged texture on the beanie.

Continue the Rows:

  • Continue with half double crochet stitches in the back loop only until your piece measures approximately 17.5 to 18 inches in length. Remember that it should be a bit shorter than the actual head circumference as the material will stretch.

Sewing the Rectangle to Form a Tube:

  • Fold the rectangle so that both ends meet and align the stitches.
  • Use slip stitches or a sewing method to join both ends, forming a tube.

Closing the Top of the Beanie:

  • Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  • Thread the tail through a darning needle.
  • Weave the yarn through the top edge stitches of the tube, pull to cinch the top closed, and secure with several knots.

Finishing Touches:

  • Sew in any loose ends.
  • Optionally, fold up the rim of the beanie for a finished look.

Stretch and Fit:

  • Give the beanie a gentle stretch to fit more comfortably, keeping in mind that it will also stretch a bit with wear.

Additional Notes:

  • Choose a comfortable, stretchy yarn that will fit snugly but not too tightly.
  • Adjust hook size accordingly if you notice the stitch gauge is too tight or too loose.
