Materials Needed:

  • Yarn (Brand: I Love This Yarn from Hobby Lobby)
  • Size I crochet hook

Pattern Instructions:

Base Round:

  • Start by making a slip knot.
  • Chain 48.
  • Slip stitch into the very first chain you made to form a circle (Ensure the chain is not twisted).
  • Chain 1.

Round 1:

  • Half double crochet (HDC) into the same stitch as your chain.
  • HDC in each stitch around.
  • You should have 48 HDCs at the end.
  • Slip stitch to the first HDC to join.
  • Chain 1.

In Round 2:

  • Working in back post half double crochet (BPHDC) for the first stitch.
  • Front post half double crochet (FPHDC) in the next.
  • Alternate BPHDC and FPHDC around the entire circle, ending with 48 stitches.
  • Slip stitch to the first stitch and chain 1.

Round 3-6:

  • HDC in each stitch around.
  • Slip stitch and chain 1 at the end of each round.

Forming the Front Panel:

Row 1:

  • HDC across 16 stitches; chain 1 and turn.

Row 2:

  • Start with an HDC decrease over the first two stitches, then HDC in next 12 stitches, and end with an HDC decrease over the last two stitches; chain 1 and turn.

After Row 3:

  • Repeat the pattern from Row 2, but with 10 HDCs in the middle.

For Row 4:

  • Decrease, then HDC in next 8, decrease again; chain 1 and turn.

Row 5:

  • Decrease, then HDC in next 6, decrease again; chain 1 and turn.

Row 6-7:

  • HDC in each stitch across (8 HDCs).

Forming the Back Panel:

  • Skip next 6 stitches from the front panel, attach yarn at the seventh stitch.
  • HDC across 20 stitches; chain 1 and turn.
  • Start decreasing at the first two stitches, followed by 16 HDC, then decrease over the last two stitches again; chain 1 and turn.
  • Continue decreasing at both ends of each row while reducing the number of HDCs between the decreases until the final row.
  • Finish off each row by chaining 1 and turning.

Assembly:

  • Use a yarn needle to sew the front and back panels together using the tail left from the final stitch.
  • Weave in any loose ends.

Leg Opening Lining:

  • Attach yarn at the leg opening.
  • Chain 1, then HDC evenly around (28 times total).
  • Alternate between BPHDC and FPHDC for the entire round for a ribbed effect.
  • Slip stitch to join and cut yarn, weaving in the ends.

Finishing:

  • You can add embellishments like flowers or accents as desired to personalize the diaper cover.
