Knitting Lace Pattern Step By Step

This pattern creates a beautiful lace effect with a stockinette stitch background.

Materials

  • Knitting needles:
    • One size larger than recommended for your yarn (for stockinette stitch)
    • One size smaller than recommended for your yarn (for lace pattern)
  • Yarn of your choice

Gauge

Swatch in stockinette stitch using the larger needle size to check your gauge. Gauge is not crucial for this pattern, but knowing it will help you estimate the finished size of your project.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k)
  • Purl (p)
  • Knit Crossed Back (kcbl): Insert the right needle into the stitch as if to knit, but instead, bring the yarn behind the stitch and knit it through the back loop.

Abbreviations

This pattern creates a textured stockinette stitch background with a lace pattern on top. The lace pattern is formed by the "Knit Crossed Back" stitches in every other row.

Tips:

  • This pattern is a good introduction to lace knitting as it only uses basic stitches with a slight variation.
  • Be sure to knit the crossed back stitches loosely to allow the lace pattern to open up.
  • You can use this pattern for a variety of projects, such as scarves, shawls, or even as a border for another project.
