This knit Border pattern is a great choice for beginners! It uses only knit stitches and simple decreases, making it easy to learn. The braids add a nice touch of detail without being complicated. Plus, the rolled edge created by the cast-on stitches gives a neat finish to your project.
Knitting Border
Cast On:
- Cast on a number of stitches that's a multiple of 3 + 1 (for symmetry) + 2 (edging stitches). (e.g. 30 stitches)
Divide Stitches:
- Divide the cast-on stitches into sections with a marker.
Repeat Pattern:
Row 1:
- Edging stitch: Knit 1.
- Braid: Knit 1, then perform a rightward leaning knit decrease (knit 2nd stitch into 1st, then knit 1st off needle).
- Repeat the braid 3 times.
- Symmetry stitch: Knit 1.
Row 2:
- Edging stitch: Slip 1st stitch.
- Symmetry stitch: Knit 1.
- Reverse braid: Knit 2, then perform a leftward leaning knit decrease (knit 1st stitch over 2nd, then knit 2nd off needle).
- Repeat the reverse braid twice more.
- Knit 1.
- Edging stitch: Knit 1 purlwise.
Continue:
- Rows 1 and 2 establish the pattern. Keep knitting these two rows to create the desired length of border edging.
Tips:
- Knitting the braids in a granny style (knitting the stitch in back) creates a mirrored look.
- The cast-on stitches create a rolled edge on the bottom side of the border.
