Materials Needed
- Worsted weight yarn (Each stocking roughly 12-13 grams or about 27-30 yards/25-27 meters)
- US-8 (5-millimeter) needles with at least a 32-inch (81 centimeter) circumference
- Yarns used include: "I Love This Yarn", "Big Twist Twinkle", and "Impeccable Yarns"
Gauge
- Not critical, aim for neat appearance without large holes, especially around the heel
- Roughly 18 stitches & 24.5 rounds per 4 inches (10 cm)
Stocking Size
- Approximately 4 inches (10 cm) from cuff to heel bend (leg length)
- Approximately 3.5 inches (9 cm) from heel bend to toe (foot length)
- Circumference about 5.5 inches (14 cm)
Pattern Steps
Starting the Cuff
- Cast On: 25 stitches using a method of your choice (Long tail cast on recommended).
- Join in the Round: Ensure there are no twists in your stitches. Adjust to have 13 stitches on the back needle and 12 on the front needle, then redistribute to have 12 stitches on each needle after joining.
- Ribbing: Work in a 1x1 rib (knit 1, purl 1) for five rows.
Leg
- Knit 12 rounds straight after the ribbing.
Heel
- Work a 16-round heel section using short rows. This involves making double stitches (to turn) and will only be worked back and forth on one needle.
- German Short Rows: Use these for the turning points in the heel section, remember to slip stitches with yarn in front to create the double stitches.
Foot
Resume working in the round, knit 10 rounds straight for the foot section.
Toe Decreases
- Work a series of decrease rounds until you have 8 stitches left in total.
- Decrease Technique: "Knit two together" for decreases.
Finishing the Stocking
- Cut a generous yarn tail, thread through remaining stitches, pull tight to close the toe.
- Weave in the ends.
Making the I-Cord Loop
- Cast On: 3 stitches onto your circular needles.
- Work an I-cord for the desired length. Do not turn work; slide stitches to opposite end of needle and knit across.
- Attach the I-Cord: Use the yarn tail to sew the I-cord onto the stocking, weave in ends.
Assembling the Garland
Repeat the process to create as many stockings as desired.
- Create a long I-cord or use a strong piece of twine as the main garland string.
- Attach stockings to the garland string using loops or directly threading through.
Hanging the Garland
- Adjust the spacing of the stockings as desired.
- Utilize hooks or weights at each end to drape the garland over a mantle or similar area.
