Knit Baby Hat Pattern
Create an adorable baby hat with this knitting pattern. Perfect for beginners, you’ll work with a quarter stitch and rib stitch, incorporating an i-cord for a seamless finish.
Materials Needed:
- Yarn of your choice
- Knitting needles adequate for your yarn
- Stitch markers
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge:
Match the gauge that fits the baby head size you desire.
Instructions:
Cast On:
Begin with 55 stitches using an Italian cast-on. You can find tutorials for that cast-on method if needed.
Ribbing:
- Row 1: Knit the knit stitch and slip the purl stitch with the yarn in front to the end.
- Row 2: Slip the edge stitch knitwise, then purl the knit stitch and slip purl stitch with yarn in front till the last stitch, purl the last one. Turn your work.
- Repeat the two rows above for a total of seven more rows, creating a ribbed pattern.
Garter Stitch Section:
- After completing the ribbing, switch to a garter stitch by knitting all stitches in each row for 20 rows, creating a ridge every two rows. You should count a total of 10 ridges.
Shaping the Hat:
Divide your stitches into three sections: 18, 19, and 18 stitches, and place markers to indicate the divisions.
- Continue with the garter stitch across all stitches.
- When you reach a marked section, slip the marker, and at the end of the section, knit two stitches together to start forming the decrease for the hat shaping. Repeat this process, alternating sides with each row, gradually decreasing down to 8 stitches on each side.
Decreasing the Crown:
Once you are down to 8 stitches on each side and your set number in the middle, start decreasing the middle part as well by knitting two stitches together after the first two stitches of the middle part and before the last two stitches of it, in addition to the side decreases.
Finishing the Crown:
- Continue the decreases until you have 7 stitches in the middle section and two on each side.
- Then on the next right side row, knit two stitches together over the entire row until you have three stitches left.
- Knit those three stitches together, cut the yarn, and pull it through the last loop to secure.
I-cord Edging and Ties:
- Cast on three stitches for the i-cord and transfer them to the left needle.
- Knit the stitches normally, then pass them back to the left needle, pulling the yarn tightly from behind.
- Repeat this process until the i-cord reaches the desired length for the ties.
- When the i-cord is of sufficient length, attach it to the edge of the hat by picking up stitches from the hat's edge into the i-cord as you knit along.
- Continue the i-cord separately for the other tie after you've knitted around the edge of the hat.
Finishing Touches:
- Weave in all the loose ends.
- Block the hat to desired measurements.
- Optional: Add decorative elements like pom-poms or little bear ears at the top if you wish.
Now you have a cozy handmade hat, perfect for keeping a baby warm and stylish. Enjoy your knitting!
