Crochet A Mini Octopus Keychain Pattern

Materials Needed:

  • Size 4 yarn (soft and fluffy recommended)
  • 4.5 millimeter crochet hook
  • Darning needle
  • Keychain rings
  • Pliers (for keychain assembly)
  • 6 millimeter safety eyes
  • Stuffing material

Instructions:

Start with a Slip Knot:

1 Save

  • Cross the yarn, insert your fingers into the loop, grab the yarn and pull through. Insert your crochet hook, tighten slightly.

Foundation Chain:

  • Chain 2. This forms the foundation of your octopus.

Round 1:

  • Make 6 single crochets (sc) into the 2nd chain from the hook, forming a circle.

Joining:

  • Join with a slip stitch (slst) to the first sc made, then chain 1 to prepare for the next round.

Round 2:

2 Save

  • Increase Round: Make 2 sc in each st around. You should have 12 sc at the end of this round.

Round 3:

  • Pattern Round: [1 sc in the next st, 2 sc in the next st] repeat around. You should have 18 sc at the end.

For Round 4:

  • Sc in each st around (18 sc total). Slst to join and chain 1.

Round 5:

  • Begin with a decrease (combining two stitches into one), then sc in each st around. You should end with 17 stitches.

Round 6:

3 Save

  • Decrease Round: Sc 8, then decrease once, followed by normal single crochets for the rest of the round, ending with 16 stitches.

For Round 7:

  • Decrease all around until you have 8 stitches left. This prepares the body for the tentacles, reflecting an octopus's 8 appendages.

Creating Tentacles:

  • For each tentacle: Chain 4, then slip stitch into the next stitch on the body. Repeat until you have 8 tentacles.

Finishing the Body:

4 Save

  • Chain 1, cut the yarn leaving a long tail, and pull the yarn through securely.

Making the Stopper:

  • Start with a slip knot, chain 2.
  • Make 6 sc into the 2nd chain from the hook. Join with a slst.
  • Next Round: 2 sc in each st around (12 sc total). Join, chain 1, and cut the yarn.

Attaching the Eyes:

  • Place the safety eyes on the body. Adjust for preferred spacing. The stuffing will help keep them in place.
