Ready to turn a bundle of yarn into your new favorite accessory? Let's knit together a crochet hood with a collar that's as fun to make as it is to wear! Imagine wrapping this snug piece around you, feeling like a cozy superhero with a stylish secret.
Crochet Hood
Materials Needed:
- Hook: Number 5
- Markers: Can use pins
- Plastic Needle: Large eye (or a hook can be utilized for certain steps)
- Yarn: 2 skeins of ALize LanaGold Classic (51% acrylic, 49% wool; 100g / 240m); Color used in the project: 221
Collar:
Start:
- Cast on 36 air loops to create the foundation chain. Make sure the loops are loosely created for easy stitching later. The foundation chain should measure approximately 25 cm.
First Row:
- From the second loop from the hook, insert the hook into the loop and create a single crochet. Continue this across, ending with a total of 35 single crochets. Mark the first loop with a marker to avoid losing it.
Turn:
- At the end of each row, make one air loop, turn your work, and continue knitting in the same direction.
Subsequent Rows:
- Starting from the second loop from the hook, grab the back wall of each loop and perform single crochets across the row, maintaining the total stitch count at 35. Remember to turn the work at each row’s end with an air loop.
Hood:
- After completing 70 rows (measuring 44 cm in length and 22 cm in width), prepare to join the ends to form the collar. Fold the rectangle piece with the wrong sides together, ensuring the stitches match up.
Joining:
- Use a slip stitch to join the ends of the collar together, forming a seamless seam.
Starting the Hood:
- Begin working on top of the collar, picking up and knitting in half double crochets around the edge, inserting the hook under the edge loops.
First Row of Hood:
- Fold the seam in half to determine the starting point. With two air loops on the hook, start making half double crochets along the edge.
Increasing:
- At the beginning of the subsequent rows, add increases (two half double crochets in one loop) at the edges to widen the hood.
- Complete 12 rows with increases at both edges. Measure a 13 cm extension from this initial row.
Without Increases:
- Continue knitting rows without increases until the hood reaches the desired height (approximately 30 cm from the start of the hood).
Decreases:
- Near the top of the hood, start making decreases in the middle of the rows to taper the hood’s top. Alternate a decrease row with a regular row until the desired curvature is achieved.
Finishing the Hood:
- Sew the top of the hood closed by threading the yarn through the remaining loops and tightening to close the opening.
- Weave in all yarn ends to secure and clean the finishing.
Additional Tips:
- Adjust the hood size by altering the number of initial chain loops and rows knitted.
- For a child-sized version, start with fewer chain stitches and adjust the rows accordingly.
- The invisible seam technique helps keep the finishing clean, especially when turning the lapel inside out.
