Materials Needed:

  • Green, white, and red yarn
  • Crochet hook
  • Fiber cotton for stuffing
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Keychain ring
  • Black yarn for the seeds

Crochet Instructions:

Start with Green Yarn:

  • Make 13 chains.

1 Save

Row 1:

  • Start from the second chain from the hook, make 11 single crochets.
  • Make 3 single crochets in the last chain (corner).
  • Continue along the opposite side of the foundation chain, making 10 single crochets.
  • Make 1 increase in the last stitch.
  • Slip stitch to the first single crochet to join.

Row 2:

  • Chain 1 (counts as first single crochet).
  • Make 1 increase, followed by 10 single crochets.
  • Make 3 single crochets in the corner.
  • Continue with 10 single crochets.
  • End with 1 increase, slip stitch to join.

2 Save

Change to White Yarn:

Row 3:

  • Chain 1, make 32 single crochets by inserting the hook only in the inner loop of each stitch.
  • Slip stitch to join.

After Row 4:

  • Repeat Row 3.

Row 5:

  • Make decreases to shape the top of the watermelon. Alternate between single crochet and decrease stitches across this row to create a curve. Ensure you end this row with a decrease.

4 Save

Change to Red Yarn:

In Row 6:

  • Chain 1, continue with a complete round of 28 single crochets. Slip stitch to join.

Row 7:

  • Reduce the stitch count from 10 to 8. Make single crochets and include a decrease at the start and the end of this row.

Row 8:

  • Make 24 single crochets around, slip stitch to join.

For Row 9:

  • Further reduce the stitch count by making decreases.

Row 10:

  • Make 20 single crochets around, slip stitch to join.

3 Save

Row 11:

  • Continue reducing, changing stitch patterns as necessary.

After Row 12:

  • Make 16 single crochets, slip stitch to join.

Row 13 and 14:

  • Continue decreasing in each row to taper the end of the watermelon piece. Fill with fiber cotton progressively.

5 Save

Row 15:

  • Close up the watermelon by making 6 decreases across the row.
  • Cut the yarn, leaving a tail.

Finishing Touches:

  • Use the yarn needle to weave through the last row to close the stitch.
  • Attach the keychain ring.
  • Use black yarn to sew on seed details.
