Materials Needed:

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Googly eyes
  • Crochet hook (size H)
  • Clockwork legged toy (purchased from Amazon)
  • Lip buttons (or you can choose to use any kind of buttons or felt for the mouth)

Crochet Pattern:

1

Starting at the Top:

Magic Ring:

  • Create a magic ring, chain one.

Round 1:

  • Work eight half double crochets (hdc) into the magic ring, tighten the ring, then join with a slip stitch to the first hdc.

Secure Center:

  • Tighten the center of the magic ring, knot it, and weave in the ends.

Increasing Rounds:

  • Chain one, work a half double crochet in the same stitch.

Round 2:

  • Work two half double crochets in each stitch around, you should have 16 stitches at the end of this round.
  • Slip stitch to join at the end of the round.

Creating the Monster Body:

2

  • Chain one, then work one half double crochet in the same stitch, followed by one half double crochet in each stitch around.

Rounds 3-6:

  • Repeat step 7 for a total of four additional rounds (5 rounds total for the body), making sure you still have 16 stitches at the end of each round.
  • Slip stitch to join at the end of the last round, chain one, then cut your working yarn and pull through to create a knot. Weave in the end.

Attaching the Googly Eyes:

  • Work two half double crochets around the googly eyes, attaching them securely to the front of the monster.

Attaching Arms:

3

Create Arm:

  • Start with a slip knot on your crochet hook. On the third row from where you attach the eyes, insert the hook to the designated stitch and:
  • Make a single crochet (sc), chain one.
  • Work a series of chain one, single crochet along what will become the arm of the monster.
  • Repeat for the other arm.

Attaching the Mouth:

  • Place hot glue on the back of the lip button and adhere it below where you attached the googly eyes.

Finishing the Monster:

4

Assemble Toy:

  • Take the clockwork legged toy and cover it with the crocheted monster, adjusting as needed.
  • Make sure to align the wind-up knob of the toy with one of the stitches so that it can stick out and the toy can be wound up.
  • Wind the toy to see the monster walk.
