Materials Needed:

  • Yarn: Medium (4); Two different colors
  • Crochet Hook: 5.5 mm recommended, but a 6 mm J hook used due to tension.
  • Tape Measure
  • Darning/Weaving/Tapestry Needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch Markers (optional, but 3 recommended)

Pattern Steps

Starting the Cap & Initial Chains

Start with a slip knot:

  • Wrap yarn around your finger, twist it, exchange positions, and pull through to create a slip knot. Insert your crochet hook and tighten.

Chain 30 with color A (white):

  • These will set the depth of the cap. After chaining 30, use a stitch marker to mark the 30th chain. This is crucial for color changes.

Introduce color B:

  • Attach the second color of yarn (let's refer as color B) and chain 20 more. This brings the total chain count to 50.

Creating the First Row

Chain 1 extra with color B:

  • This additional chain prepares for single crochet stitches.

Single Crochet Row:

  • Skip the chain closest to the hook. Start single crocheting into the second chain, making single crochets in each chain back to the color A. You should end up with 20 single crochets in color B. When reaching the stitch marker at color A (white), switch back to color A yarn to complete the row with 30 single crochets in color A.

Adding the Second Color Effectively

  • When you're about to switch colors, bring the yarn you’re using forward to keep it out of the way for the next row.

Second Row and Beyond:

Transition to Half Double Crochet (HDC):

  • For row two, chain two (which don't count as a stitch), then half double crochet in the back loops only for the rest of the hat. This change not only adds texture but allows for stretchability of the cap.

Color Change Technique:

  • Remember, when you're doing the last stitch before changing colors, don't complete the stitch with the current color. Instead, yarn over with the new color to complete the stitch, preparing the color for the next segment.

Closing the Cap:

  • Continue the pattern (half double crochet in back loops only), alternating colors as established, until the piece measures around 15 inches (or the desired width to fit around the head).
  • To close, fold the piece right sides together, ensuring the yarn tails are at opposite ends, and slip stitch or seam together the "open" sides.

Close the Top:

  • Use a yarn needle threaded with a length of yarn to weave in and out around the top edge, then pull tight to gather and close the top of the hat. Secure with a knot and weave in the ends.

Finishing Touches:

  • Turn the brim up for a finished look.
  • Weave in all loose ends with your yarn needle for a clean finish.
