Materials needed:

  • Medium weight (worsted) yarn
  • 3.25 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Scissors
  • Polyfill stuffing (or mix of polyfill and scrap yarn)
  • Two sets of safety eyes and noses (one smaller set for the baby, one larger set for the mama)

Mama Kangaroo

Head

1 Save

Start with a magic ring and place 6 single crochets (sc) into it.

  1. Increase to 12 sc around.
  2. 1 sc, increase in next st repeat around, for a total of 18 sc.
  3. 2 sc, increase in next st repeat around, for a total of 24 sc.
  4. Last two rows: 1 sc in each st around and keep 24 sc for each row.
  5. 3 sc, increase in next st repeat around, for a total of 30 sc.
  6. For the next three rows: 1 sc in each st around, maintaining 30 sc.
  7. 4 sc, increase in next st repeat around, to 36 sc.
  8. One row of 1 sc in each st around.
  9. 5 sc, increase in next st repeat around, to 42 sc.
  10. One row of 1 sc in each st around.
  11. 6 sc, increase in next st repeat around, to 48 sc.
  12. Next five rows: 1 sc in each st around.
  13. Add safety eyes and nose between the appropriate rows now – before the head is closed.
  14. For the next row start reducing: 6 sc, decrease repeat around to 42 sc.
  15. 5 sc, decrease repeat around to 36 sc.
  16. 4 sc, decrease repeat around to 30 sc.
  17. 3 sc, decrease repeat around to 24 sc.
  18. 2 sc, decrease repeat around to 18 sc.
  19. 1 sc, decrease repeat around to 12 sc.
  20. Decrease all around to 6 sc.
  21. Finish off, leaving a long tail for sewing, and close the head.

Ears (make 2)

2 Save

  1. Magic ring with 6 sc.
  2. 1 sc, increase in next st repeat around to 12 sc.
  3. For next two rows: 1 sc in each st around.
  4. 1 sc, increase in next st repeat around to 18 sc.
  5. For next five rows: 1 sc in each st around.
  6. 1 sc, decrease repeat around to 12 sc.
  7. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Arms (make 2)

3 Save

  1. Magic ring with 6 sc.
  2. 1 sc in each st around for 6 sc.
  3. Increase to 12 sc around.
  4. Next five rows: 1 sc in each st around.
  5. In next row: 1 sc, increase in next st repeat around to 18 sc.
  6. Next four rows: 1 sc in each st around.
  7. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Legs and Foot (make 4, two for top of legs, two for feet)

  • Follow similar steps as arms but create a longer cylindrical shape for the legs, attach the foot part to the top part at the end.

Body

  1. Magic ring with 6 sc.
  2. Work similar increases as the head until you reach 54 sc around.
  3. Several rows straight with 54 sc around.
  4. Start decreasing, following similar steps in reverse order, until you reach 30 sc.
  5. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Tail

  1. Magic ring with 6 sc.
  2. Increase and continue as per body, but keep the tail relatively flat and less stuffed.

Pouch

  1. Chain 9.
  2. Starting from the second chain from hook, single crochet in each chain across and turn, increasing at both ends to create a wider base for the pouch.
  3. Sew it onto the body.

Assemble the mama kangaroo by sewing all the parts together.

Baby Joey

4 Save

Repeat the above process on a smaller scale to create the baby kangaroo, minus the pouch. Ensure the baby fits into the mama's pouch.
