Create a slip knot, then chain 4.

  1. Slip stitch into the first chain to form a ring. (Alternative: Use a magic ring/circle if you prefer.)
  2. Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet).
  3. Make 2 double crochets into the ring.
  4. Chain 2, then make 3 more double crochets into the ring.
  5. Chain 2 again, make 3 double crochets, chain 2, make another 3 double crochets, and then chain 2.
  6. Slip stitch to the top of the initial chain 3 to close the ring. Pull the yarn end to tighten the center ring.

Row 2:

  1. Slip stitch to the next corner space.
  2. Chain 3 (counts as a double crochet), make 2 more double crochets, chain 2, then 3 more double crochets in the same corner space.
  3. For each of the next 3 corner spaces: Make 3 double crochets, chain 2, and 3 more double crochets.
  4. Slip stitch into the top chain to close off Row 2.

For Row 3 (Creating the Heart):

Continue to the corner and start with a chain 3, then 2 double crochets, chain 2, and 3 double crochets.

  1. Make 3 double crochets into the next gap space. Prepare to change color.
  2. When changing color at the last double crochet of a set, leave 2 loops on the hook. Pick the new color and complete the stitch.
  3. Continue with the new color, making a corner (3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets), and change color back before completing the last double crochet of the corner by picking the previous color through the last 2 loops.
  4. Repeat the pattern, changing colors as needed to create the heart pattern within the square.
  5. Finish Row 3 by changing back to the initial color for the last set of stitches, and slip stitch to close.

Row 4 (Border):

  1. Still working with the initial color, cut the yarn, and then reattach it to a corner space to avoid slip stitching over a different color.
  2. Start with 3 double crochets in the corner, then make 3 double crochets in each gap around. In each corner, make 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets.
  3. Close the row with a slip stitch.

Row 5 (Final Border):

Change to a lighter pink or any desired border color. Begin by attaching the yarn in a corner space with a slip knot, chain 3 for your first double crochet, then add 2 more double crochets in the same space.

  1. Continue around the square making 3 double crochets in each gap space. In corner spaces, make 3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets.
  2. Complete Row 5, then chain 2 and slip stitch to fasten off. You've now finished your heart granny square!

You could create multiple squares and join them to make a variety of projects like a bucket hat, a pillowcase cover, blankets, sweaters, or gloves as mentioned.
