Crochet Christmas Tree Ornament Tutorial
Materials Needed:
- Yarn in three colors of your choice (suitable for Christmas theme)
- 5.0 mm crochet hook
- A golden string (or any alternative decorative string or yarn)
Pattern:
Start with a Magic Ring:
- Wrap yarn around your finger.
- Insert the hook, grab the yarn on the left side, pull through, and make one chain, then another.
- You'll have your magic ring with two chains (not counting as a double crochet).
For Round 1:
- In the magic ring: Yarn over and make 12 double crochets.
- Pull on the tail to close the center.
- Slip stitch on top of the first double crochet, chain one, cut off your yarn, and pull up.
Round 2 (Switch to Golden String):
- Slip stitch into the top of the first double crochet from the previous round.
- In this round, you will double the stitches to get 24. Do two single crochets in each stitch around.
- Slip stitch to the first single crochet, chain one, and pull up.
Round 3:
- Use a new color yarn, slip stitch into the first single crochet, chain two (not counting as double crochet).
- One double crochet in each single crochet from the previous round.
- Hide the tails as you work by crocheting over them.
- Slip stitch to the first double crochet, chain one, end this yarn color.
In Round 4:
- Return to using the golden string or alternative yarn.
- Start with a slip stitch in the first double crochet from the previous round, then one single crochet in the same stitch.
- For this round: two single crochets every other stitch, resulting in 36 single crochets.
- Slip stitch to the first single crochet, chain one, and pull up.
Round 5:
- Attach a new color yarn on the next single crochet.
- Follow with normal double crochets all around, one per stitch.
- Slip stitch to join and chain one.
Round 6:
- Single crochet around without increasing, maintaining the stitch count.
- This begins to form the sphere shape over the ornament.
- Slip stitch, chain one, and finish off this color.
Further Rounds:
- If you need to make the cover larger, increase appropriately in the next round(s).
- Once reaching the desired size, start decreasing to fit the ornament snugly.
Final Decreasing Rounds:
- Start reducing by making decrease stitches (pull yarn through three loops on the hook) every other stitch to fit the ornament snugly.
- Continue with double crochets and decreases as needed to make sure the cover fits tight.
Finishing:
- Once you've achieved the right size and fit, finish off with a slip stitch and chain one.
- Cut the yarn, pull through, and weave in any loose ends.
- Optionally, add a string or wire at the top for hanging.
