Crochet Mittens
Materials Needed:
- Yarn: Loops and Threads Heathered Tweed (3 weight)
- Crochet Hooks: 4 mm and 5 mm
- Other Tools:
- Stitch markers
- Darning needle
- Scissors
Pattern Overview:
- This pattern is a one-size-fits-all but can be adjusted in length. The mittens are worked starting from the wristband up to the fingertips, followed by creating the thumb.
- Wristband:
Starting Chain:
- With a 4 mm hook, chain 21.
Row 1:
- Single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the hook, then sc across (20 sc total). Turn.
Rows 2-32:
- Chain 1. For row 2, start with 1 sc under both loops, then work 18 sc in back loops only, ending with 1 sc under both loops. Repeat this row pattern until you have 32 rows. Do not chain at the end of row 32.
Joining the Cuff:
- Fold the cuff, aligning the first and the last rows. Slip stitch them together across for a total of 20 slip stitches.
Hand:
Row 1 (Setup):
- With a 5 mm hook, at the top of the cuff, work 32 sc evenly around (one for each row of the cuff), placing your first stitch at the top of a "valley".
Rows 2-11:
- Work to increase stitches around where the thumb will be:
Left Hand:
- Increase at the beginning of the row.
Right Hand:
- Increase at the end of the row.
Row 12 and Thumbhole:
- You will create a gap for the thumb by not working in a section of 13 stitches. For the right hand, the gap will be at the beginning of the row, and for the left hand, at the end.
Shaping the Hand:
- Continue working in rounds above the thumbhole, only reducing the number of stitches in every row gradually (by working decreases) until the open hand part narrows enough to close off the top.
Finishing the Hand:
- Close off the hand by slip stitching the top together when it is narrow enough.
- Weave in ends.
Thumb:
- Pick up stitches around the thumbhole and work in rounds.
- Decrease in every round until the thumb is fully covered.
- Close off the thumb similarly to the hand top and weave in ends.
Finalizing:
- Turn your mitt inside out to hide the seam and weave in any remaining loose ends for a clean finish.
