Materials Needed:
- Red worsted weight yarn (or whatever color you prefer for your crab)
- Crochet hook, size 5 millimeter
- Stuffing (or yarn scraps, as it’s a small project)
- Scissors
- Safety eyes (no specific size, but 10 millimeter is used in the example)
- Stitch marker
- Yarn needle
Crab Crochet Pattern:
Bottom Piece (Belly):
Row 1:
- Start with a magic circle.
- Work 6 single crochets (sc) into the magic circle.
- Pull tail to tighten the circle.
- Place a stitch marker at the end of the round.
Row 2:
- Work 2 sc in each stitch around for a total of 12 stitches.
- Optionally, weave in the tail as you go.
In Row 3:
- Repeat [1 sc, then 2 sc in the next stitch (increase)] 6 times.
Row 4:
- Repeat [2 sc, then 2 sc in the next stitch (increase)] 6 times.
- Slip stitch to the next stitch and cut the yarn, leaving a short tail.
Top Piece:
- Repeat the same four rows as the bottom piece but do not cut the yarn when finished. Leave it attached for the next step.
Row 5:
- Add one more row of sc around the top piece to create a small edge.
Joining Top and Bottom:
- Flip the bottom piece upside down and place the top piece on it, aligning the stitches.
- Start attaching them by single crocheting together through both layers, creating a border.
Legs and Claws:
Legs:
- Chain 5.
- Skip the first chain and single crochet into the back bump of the second chain.
- Sc in the next 3 chains, so you have 4 sc down the chain.
- Sc into the layers where the body will join, and repeat for other legs.
Claws:
- Chain 7.
- Skip the first chain, sc in the second and third chains.
- Chain 3 more (this is the "new chain").
- Skip the first chain, sc into the next 2 chains of the new chain.
- Sc in the remaining 4 chains of the original chain.
- Continue sc around the body, alternating between crab segments and appendages (legs and claws) as outlined in the video. Once all appendages are attached, and you reach the end, you may fill your crab with stuffing.
Finishing:
- Sc around to close up any gaps.
- If required, add more stuffing through the hole before entirely closing it.
- Slip stitch to the last stitch and cut the yarn, leaving a long enough tail for sewing.
- You can perform an invisible join with the yarn needle for a neat finish by threading the yarn through both loops of the first stitch of the round and back through the middle of the last stitch.
- Weave in the end securely.
