Let's talk about making a Crochet Market Bag, a fun and useful project for anyone who enjoys a bit of crocheting. This project is great for both beginners looking to learn new stitches and for those who have been crocheting for a while and want a quick, satisfying make. With this bag, you'll have the perfect companion for your shopping trips or a lovely, thoughtful gift for a friend.

Crochet Market Bag Pattern Save

Materials Needed:

  • Approx. 70g of acrylic yarn
  • 4mm crochet hook
  • Optional: 5mm crochet hook for a looser tension or larger size

Bag Strap (Tunisian Stitch):

1 Save

  • Chain 6. Skip the stitch closest to the hook.
  • Pull up a loop in each of the next 4 stitches, resulting in 5 loops on the hook.
  • Yarn over, pull through one loop, then yarn over and pull through two loops until one loop remains.
  • Work into vertical loops created by the previous step (5 times).
  • Repeat the process 50 times for the length of the strap (adjustable based on preference).

Starting the Bag:

  • Switch to a 5mm hook (or use a 4mm with loose tension) and chain 25 for the base (adjust the number for a bigger version).
  • Using the 4mm hook, work 5 single crochets into the opposite side of the strap.

2 Save

  • Ensure the strap isn't twisted, then chain 25 and slip stitch into the first single crochet made during the strap cast-off.

Building the Bag Body:

  • Chain 2, turn work, and start your first double crochet into the last chain made, skipping the slip stitch and the two chains.
  • Work a total of 59 double crochets across.
  • Chain 3, replacing every second double crochet with a chain for the next two rows (keep chains loose).
  • Proceed with a pattern that effectively doubles the stitch count by inserting a chain between double crochets.

3 Save

Mesh Pattern:

  • After increasing stitch count, begin the mesh pattern:
  • Chain 4, skip a stitch, then triple crochet, chain 1, repeat around.
  • This three-row repeat involves a pattern of skip one, triple crochet, chain one.
  • The pattern repeats for a total of 18 rows without increasing stitch count (adjustable based on bag size).

4 Save

Decreasing For the Bag’s Upper Part:

  • Start reducing the stitch count by combining double crochets and removing chains in between.
  • Continue until you reduce to about 30 stitches, halving the number by skipping every second stitch.

Closing the Bag:

  • Work 14 single crochets through both sides to stitch the bottom together.

5 Save

  • Cut the yarn and pull through to finish.

Drawstring:

  • Chain 120 (or enough to wrap around the bag comfortably).
  • Weave this chain through the top part of the bag, using the mesh holes as guidance.
