Cast on stitches and knit the sole.

  • Cast on 27 stitches with your chosen yarn and needles.
  • Knit 1 row (all knit stitches).
  • Knit 6 rows in alternating knit and purl rows (knit 1 row, purl 1 row).

Change color and knit the sides.

2 Save

Attach a new color of yarn to the side of the cast-on stitches.

  • Knit 2 rows with the new color.
  • In the following row, knit 2 stitches together at the beginning of the row to incorporate the working yarn into the stitch.
  • Continue knitting rows with the new color, knitting the first stitch and purling the last stitch of each row.

Repeat color sequence and knit the top of the foot.

  • Knit 2 rows with a new color of yarn.
  • Knit 4 rows with another new color of yarn.
  • Knit 2 rows with white yarn.
  • Repeat the color sequence (2 rows new color, 4 rows another new color, 2 rows white yarn) until you have a total of 8 colored stripes.

Knit the heel.

3 Save

Continue knitting up the side of the cast-on stitches in the same color as the last color stripe.

  • Knit until the height of the heel piece reaches your desired height (stopping at the point where the heel starts curving on your foot).

Close the heel.

Thread a tapestry needle with yarn and sew the cast-on stitches together to close the heel.

4 Save

Graft the toe.

  • With the tapestry needle and yarn, sew the stitches on the top of the foot together to close the toe.

Finish the slippers.

  • Weave in all loose ends.
  • Optionally, add a pompom or other embellishment to the top of the slipper.

Tips

  • Cast on a few extra stitches if your gauge is looser than recommended.
  • You can adjust the number of color stripes to your preference.
  • Be sure to sew the heel and toe closed securely so the slippers don't gape.
