Crochet Simple Beanie Tutorial For Beginners

This crochet beanie tutorialis perfect for beginners and seasoned crocheters alike, this guide walks you through each step to make a warm, stylish beanie. From starting with a magic circle to finishing with a snug, comfortable fit, you'll learn how to work your stitches to create something truly special.

Materials Needed:

  • Medium weight yarn
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Pattern:

Round 1:

  • Start by making a magic circle.
  • Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch).
  • Make 10 double crochets (DC) into the magic circle.
  • Pull on the tail to tighten the magic circle.
  • Slip stitch (SL ST) into the top of the first DC to close the round. You should have 10 DC.

Save

Round 2:

  • Chain 2 (again, does not count as a stitch).
  • Make 2 DC in each stitch around for a total of 20 DC.
  • Slip stitch into the top of the first DC to close the round.

Color Change (Optional):

Method 1:

  • On the final yarn over of the last stitch of the round, introduce the new color and complete the stitch. Pull tails to secure and proceed with the new color.

Method 2:

  • Finish the round in the original color, cut the yarn leaving a tail, and then join the new color yarn by securing it on top of the chain with a slip stitch, then chain 2 and proceed.

Round 3:

  • Chain 2.
  • Make 1 DC into the first stitch, then 2 DC in the next stitch (repeat - around).
  • You should end up with 30 DC by the end of this round.
  • Slip stitch into the top of the first DC to close the round.

Rounds and Beyond:

  • For each following round, increase the number of DC between increases by one. For example:

Round 4:

  • 2 DC in the first and second stitches, then 2 DC in the next stitch.

Round 5:

  • 3 DC in the first, second, and third stitches, then 2 DC in the next stitch.
  • Continue in this pattern until your piece measures approximately 9cm from the center to the edge, increasing the circumference to fit.

No More Increases:

  • Once the diameter is about 9 cm, stop increasing.
  • Chain 2, then make 1 DC in each stitch around without increasing.
  • Continue with 1 DC in each stitch for each round until the beanie reaches your desired length.

Finishing:

  • To finish, slip stitch into the top of the first DC of your last round.
  • Cut your yarn, leaving a tail. Pull the tail through the loop on your hook and tighten.
  • Weave in all your tails with a yarn needle.
  • Optionally, roll up the bottom of the beanie for styling.
