Crochet Beanie Tutorial
Materials Needed:
- Medium weight yarn
- 5.5 mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
Pattern:
Round 1:
- Start by making a magic circle.
- Chain 2 (does not count as a stitch).
- Make 10 double crochets (DC) into the magic circle.
- Pull on the tail to tighten the magic circle.
- Slip stitch (SL ST) into the top of the first DC to close the round. You should have 10 DC.
Round 2:
- Chain 2 (again, does not count as a stitch).
- Make 2 DC in each stitch around for a total of 20 DC.
- Slip stitch into the top of the first DC to close the round.
Color Change (Optional):
Method 1:
- On the final yarn over of the last stitch of the round, introduce the new color and complete the stitch. Pull tails to secure and proceed with the new color.
Method 2:
- Finish the round in the original color, cut the yarn leaving a tail, and then join the new color yarn by securing it on top of the chain with a slip stitch, then chain 2 and proceed.
Round 3:
- Chain 2.
- Make 1 DC into the first stitch, then 2 DC in the next stitch (repeat - around).
- You should end up with 30 DC by the end of this round.
- Slip stitch into the top of the first DC to close the round.
Rounds and Beyond:
- For each following round, increase the number of DC between increases by one. For example:
Round 4:
- 2 DC in the first and second stitches, then 2 DC in the next stitch.
Round 5:
- 3 DC in the first, second, and third stitches, then 2 DC in the next stitch.
- Continue in this pattern until your piece measures approximately 9cm from the center to the edge, increasing the circumference to fit.
No More Increases:
- Once the diameter is about 9 cm, stop increasing.
- Chain 2, then make 1 DC in each stitch around without increasing.
- Continue with 1 DC in each stitch for each round until the beanie reaches your desired length.
Finishing:
- To finish, slip stitch into the top of the first DC of your last round.
- Cut your yarn, leaving a tail. Pull the tail through the loop on your hook and tighten.
- Weave in all your tails with a yarn needle.
- Optionally, roll up the bottom of the beanie for styling.
