Crochet Pleats Pattern
Materials Needed:
- 5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn of your choice
Creating the Base Chain:
- Start with making a loop with your yarn and place it on your crochet hook.
- Chain 55 stitches. This counts as the base for the front panel of the skirt.
- Continue to chain an additional 40 stitches. The extra chains are needed to create enough fabric for the pleats.
Making the Double Crochet Stitches:
- Begin your first row by making a double crochet stitch in each chain:
- Wrap the yarn around the hook, then insert the hook under the two loops of the next chain.
- Wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull it through the chain, leaving you with three loops on the hook.
- Wrap the yarn over the hook once more, pull through two loops, then wrap the yarn over the hook again and pull through the last two loops. That's one double crochet stitch completed.
- Continue with double crochet stitches all the way to the end of the row.
- Once at the end, turn your work to start the next row in the same manner, face the back (inside) of the work, and start double crocheting as the first stitch into the first chain.
Working on the Length:
- The video suggests working down to around 20 rows for a skirt, but demonstrates just 10 rows to show the pleating effect.
Creating the Pleats:
- After completing your rows, cut off the yarn, but leave it attached if you prefer not to cut.
- Start folding your pleats from the top or first row you made:
- Count in 11 stitches and place a marker.
- Count another 10 stitches from there, and then fold these 10 stitches in half to five, making your pleat with these stitches resting on each other.
- Use a marker to keep your place if necessary, and continue folding pleats in this manner along the row. Every 10 stitches after the initial 11 are folded in half to create each pleat.
- To attach the pleats, weave the yarn through the folded sections and secure.
Finishing the Pleats:
- For a seamless look, do slip stitches under loops without adding an extra row to maintain the pattern correct.
- Repeat the pleating process until all pleats are done along the row.
Adding a Rib:
- At the end of attaching your pleats, create a ribbed border by facing the front of the work and choosing your stitch to weave in between the stitches of the pleats.
- To attach the pleated fabric to the main panel, weave through the top chains of both the front panel and the top of the pleat, wrap the yarn around, and pull through all loops.
