Crochet Plaid Scarf
Materials Needed:
- Weight 6 yarn for the bulk of the scarf: Four skeins of cream, two skeins of denim blue colored yarn (Recommended: Premier Yarns Anti-Pilling Everyday Bulky Yarn)
- Weight 4 navy yarn for stripes and surface crochet: One skein
- Weight 4 yarns of various colors for the surface crochet
- 9mm crochet hook (or a smaller hook for surface crochet if needed)
- Scissors
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Stitch markers
Pattern Instructions:
Foundation and First Stripes:
Start:
- Create a slip knot and chain 15 (for about 6.5 inches / 16-17 cm wide). Turn your work.
Row 1:
- Chain 1 (as a turning chain), then make 15 half double crochets (hdc) starting in the second chain from the hook. Place a stitch marker at the beginning of the row.
Row 2:
- Chain 1, then hdc across for a total of 15 hdc. Before completing the last stitch, introduce navy yarn by completing the last pull-through with the new color.
- Remember to double up the weight 4 yarn (pulling from the center and outside of the skein) to match the thickness of weight 6 yarn.
After Row 3:
- Chain 1 with new navy blue doubled yarn, ensuring that as you make this row, you are carrying the cream section working yarn along underneath your stitches for easy color change back.
- Complete the row, cut the navy yarn, and switch back to cream yarn.
Rows 4-5:
- Work two more rows of cream color. No need to carry the navy yarn.
For Row 6:
- Switch to denim blue yarn (also weight 6) in the last stitch of row 5 and carry cream yarn.
Rows 7-11:
- Continue with five rows of cream and, when useful, carry over the denim yarn underneath to reduce loose ends.
Row 12:
- Add another row of light blue color (denim blue), carrying the cream underneath.
Repeat Rows 1-12:
- as the pattern set until you reach the desired length for your scarf. The creator did 101 rows to reach about 62 inches.
Surface Crochet (Plaid Effect):
Switch to a smaller crochet hook:
- (suggested 5.5 mm or in the range of 6mm to 4mm) for easier work.
Starting Surface Crochet:
- Create a slip knot on the smaller hook, choose your starting point at the edge of the scarf, and pull up a loop in the designated stitch from the top.
Work the Surface Slip Stitches:
- Perform slip stitches going perpendicular across the rows of the scarf. Notice how the stitches are offset – alternate working into the gaps between stitches and directly into the stitches to maintain a straight line. Manage your tension to prevent pulling the fabric too tight.
Repeat:
- Continue this process parallel to each edge across the width of the scarf, spacing the rows of slip stitches as desired to create the plaid pattern.
Finish Off:
- At the end of each line of surface crochet, chain one, cut the yarn leaving a tail, and pull it through to secure.
Final Steps:
Weave in all loose ends:
- to tidy up your work.
Block the scarf:
- if desired to even out the stitches and set the shape.
Care:
- Follow care instructions as per the yarn labels, typically involving washing gently and laying flat to dry.
