This fun and colorful project and create your very own adorable knitted jellyfish! This pattern is suitable for intermediate knitters who are comfortable with machine knitting and a bit of crochet for the finishing touches. Let's get started!

Materials Needed:

  • 40 needle knitting machine (Central machine or similar)
  • Yarn: Karen Blossom cakes in Radiant Rainbow or similar medium weight yarn
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Fiberfill for stuffing
  • Crochet hook: 4.25 mm or your preferred size within the range
  • Wool needle, preferably with a curved tip for easier sewing
  • Row counter (optional, but helpful)
  • Tensioner (optional)

Head and Base:

Head:

  1. Set up your knitting machine with the yarn.
  2. Perform a long tail cast-on using all 40 needles.
  3. Knit 50 rows.
  4. Cast off with a long tail method. This completes the head.

Base:

  1. Repeat the steps for the head but only knit 40 rows before casting off.

Finishing the Head and Base:

  1. For both the head and base, close off one end by threading the yarn through all stitches and pulling tight. Secure with a knot.
  2. On the head, choose which side you want as the top and bottom based on the color gradient. Stuff the head moderately, aiming for an oval shape, rather than a tight round shape, and then close off the open end leaving some space. Do not completely cinch it shut.

Jellyfish "Skirt":

  1. Take the base piece and flatten.
  2. Using the remaining yarn tail and a wool needle, sew the base to the bottom of the head piece. This creates a "skirt" around the jellyfish head.

Tentacles:

Knitting:

  1. On your 40 needle machine, set up for a flat panel using 9 needles.
  2. Knit a flat panel of 64 rows long.
  3. Cast off.

Adding Pipe Cleaners:

  1. Fold the knitted strip lengthwise over a pipe cleaner. Sew along the edge to secure but leave the ends a little free for flexibility.

Attaching Tentacles:

  1. Sew the tentacles to the underside of the jellyfish base. Distribute evenly and allow them to dangle freely.

Crocheted Loop (for hanging):

  1. With the same yarn, chain 20 using the crochet hook.
  2. Beginning from the second chain from the hook, perform a single crochet back along the chain.
  3. Sew the crocheted strip’s ends together, forming a loop.
  4. Sew this loop to the top of the jellyfish head.

Decorative Details:

For optional embellishments, consider using different yarn textures or colors for the tentacles. You could also add facial features using black yarn to sew simple eyes and a smiling mouth.

Tips:

  • Always stretch out your knitted pieces before assembling to align the stitches.
  • Use a tensioner for even knitting but adjust based on your yarn’s weight.
  • Customize your jellyfish with various tentacle lengths or additional decorative elements like bows or glitter.
