Materials:

  • US number 5 straight needles
  • 100% cotton yarn

Instructions:

Save

Cast on 35 stitches using the longtail cast-on method.

Start with two rows of garter stitch (knit every stitch) for the border, incorporating the salvage edge stitches.

  • At the beginning of every right side row, knit the first stitch.
  • At the end of every right side row, slip the last stitch knitwise with yarn in back.
  • At the beginning of every wrong side row, purl the first stitch.
  • At the end of every wrong side row, slip the last stitch purlwise with yarn in front.

Save

Stitch Pattern (4 row repeat):

  • Row 1 (RS): K1 (salvage stitch), *P1, K2; repeat from * to last three stitches, P1, K1, slip 1 knitwise with yarn in back.
  • Row 2 (WS): P1 (salvage stitch), *K2, P1; repeat from * to last two stitches, K1, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front.
  • Row 3 (RS): Repeat Row 1.
  • Row 4 (WS): P1 (salvage stitch), K to the last stitch, slip 1 purlwise with yarn in front.

Save

Repeat these four rows until the dishcloth is the desired length, ending with two more rows of garter stitch and then bind off loosely.

Granite Relief Pattern

Instructions:

  • Cast on 40 stitches (or a multiple of 2).
  • Begin with two rows of garter stitch for the border, incorporating salvage edge stitches as described before.

Stitch Pattern (4 row repeat):

Save

  • Row 1 (RS): Knit all stitches, maintaining the salvage edge stitch pattern.
  • Row 2 (WS): Purl 1 (salvage stitch), then knit 2 stitches together across to the last stitch, slip the last stitch purlwise with yarn in front.
  • Row 3 (RS): Knit 1 (salvage stitch), then knit into the front and back of every stitch across to increase back to the original number of stitches, slip the last stitch knitwise with yarn in back.
  • Row 4 (WS): Purl 1 (salvage stitch), purl across all stitches, slip the last stitch purlwise with yarn in front.

Continue repeating these four rows until the dishcloth is as long as desired. Finish with two more rows of garter stitch at the top and then bind off loosely.
