Instructions

1. Central Caterpillar Section

Magic Ring and Foundation

  1. MR, ch 2 (counts as first dc), then dc 4 times into ring (5 dc total).
  2. Pull ring tight. This forms the “tail” of the caterpillar.

Increasing Rounds

  • Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Inc in first st (ch 2 base), dc in next 3 sts, inc in last st (ch 2 at end). (7 dc)
  • Row 3: Turn. Skip first st, sl st into next 2 sts. In third st: ch 2, dc (inc). In next 2 sts: inc in each. End with 2 dc in last st. (8 dc)
  • Row 4: Ch 2, turn. Inc in first st, dc in each until last st, inc in last st. (8 dc)
  • Repeat:
    • Odd rows: Turn, skip first st, sl st into next 2 (or 3 for later rounds), inc in each st as directed.
    • Even rows: Ch 2, turn, inc at start and end, dc in remaining.

Continue as above, alternating slip stitch rows (odd) and normal increase rows (even), following this sequence, until you reach Row 10:

Row 10: Ch 2, turn, inc at beginning, dc in each st, inc at end. (14 dc)

2. Caterpillar Head

  • Row 11: Turn, skip first st, sl st into next 4, ch 2 (counts as dc), dc in next 5 sts. (6 dc)
  • Row 12: Ch 1, turn. Working across 6 dc:
    • sc in first st, sc in second st (make antenna): ch 3, sl st in first ch, sc in same st. sc in next st, sc in next st, sc in fifth st (make antenna): ch 3, sl st in first ch, sc in same st. sc in last st.
  • Fasten off.

3. V-Stitch Openings for Wings

Upper and Lower Wing Holes

  • With RS facing, attach yarn at top corner (“head”).
  • Upper wing: Ch 4 (first ch secures, 2 ch are for dc, 1 ch separation), dc in same sp, ch 5, dc in next outer corner sp, ch 1, dc in same sp (V-stitch), ch 3, dc in next outer lower corner ("tail"), ch 1, dc in same sp (third V-stitch).
  • Fasten off and repeat on opposite side, maintaining direction for symmetry.

4. First Wing Panel – Top Section

First Round

  • Attach chosen color at first V-stitch hole (upper edge).
  • Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc 3 more times (4 dc total) in the same sp.
  • Ch 1, move to next V-stitch/sp (group of 5 chains), dc 5 times in same sp.
  • Ch 1, next V-stitch/sp (group of 3 chains, lower edge), dc 3 times in sp.
  • Ch 1, final V-stitch/sp (lower outer corner), dc 4 times in sp.

Continue following symmetry (each edge group matches the opposite).

Second Round

  • Turn, skip first st, sl st into next 2 sts. Ch 2, dc in same sp (inc). Inc in next st. In center groups: inc in each st for 5-dc group. For 3-dc groups, work all dc into center st.
  • Edge groups: inc in the first and second dc to maintain 4 dc at edges.

Subsequent Rounds

Continue alternating:

  • Row with increases (even): inc at beginning and end, dc in between.
  • Row with slip stitches (odd): skip first, sl st next 2 or 3, inc as directed.

Measurement

  • After 6 rounds, measure width from center caterpillar to outer wing. For size S: 14 cm. Adjust rounds as needed for proper coverage.

First Round

  • Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc 2 more times (3 dc total), ch 1, move to next V-stitch/sp, dc 3 in center, ch 1, next V-stitch/sp (upper edge), dc 4 times in sp.

  • Final rounds: Continue decreasing until only 2-3 dc remain.
  • End last row with ch 1 and fasten off.

6. Second Wing Panel – Repeat

  • Repeat all steps for the opposite side, taking care to maintain RS and direction for symmetry.

Pattern Corrections

  • Always begin and end each row on the correct side to maintain symmetry.
  • For smaller or larger bust, add or subtract rounds as needed, checking coverage after every 6 rounds.

Tips

  • Try on as you go for perfect fit—especially for the wings and caterpillar section.
  • Hide all strands as you crochet for a seamless finish.
  • Use stitch markers if needed for tracking decreases/increases.
  • Block final piece for sharp edges and smooth butterfly shapes.
