Easy & Adorable Crochet Hair Scrunchie Pattern

Jan 8, 2025 · Leave a Comment

Whipping up a crochet hair scrunchie is a delightful way to add a homemade touch to your look. Picture this: you're flipping through your favorite yarn colors, picking the perfect one to wrap around your hair.  These scrunchies bring a cozy charm to ponytails and buns, and the best part? You can make them to match every outfit and mood.

  • Hair elastic
  • 6mm crochet hook (J hook) - or size 5/5.5mm depending on comfort and the yarn used

Starting Knot:

  • Tie your yarn to the hair elastic, leaving about 4-5 inches for a tail. Tie a double knot for security.

Row 1 (Single Crochets around the Elastic):

  • Insert your hook into the center of the hair scrunchie.
  • Perform single crochets around the hair elastic, fitting as many as you can - approximately 60 single crochets are suggested.
  • You may need to scooch the stitches around to fit all of them on the elastic.

Slip Stitch to Join:

  • Once you have your 60 single crochets (or as many as you can fit), join to the first single crochet with a slip stitch.
  • Weave in the beginning tail using the darning needle, going over the stitches, but not through the elastic.

Row 2 (Double Crochet Increases):

  • Chain up three, which will count as your first double crochet.
  • Perform two more double crochets into the same space as the chain 3.
  • In each single crochet around, work 3 double crochets (creating an increase).
  • Continue this pattern around the entire hair scrunchie, making sure to spread the stitches as needed.

Joining Row 2:

  • Once you've worked 3 double crochets into each stitch around, join to the top of the chain 3 from the beginning of the row with a slip stitch.

Row 3 (Single Crochets to Finish):

  • Chain 1 and then work into the backside of the hair scrunchie.
  • Work one single crochet into each stitch around.
  • After the last stitch, find the first single crochet and join with a slip stitch.

Finishing Off:

  • Cut the yarn leaving a tail, pull it through the loop from your hook to fasten off, and weave in this end with your darning needle.

Adjust Ruffles:

  • Manipulate the scrunchie with your hands to spread the ruffles evenly.
