Crochet Baby Mittens
Materials Needed:
- Medium weight yarn (example used: Capri by Loops and Threads, 57% cotton, 28% nylon, 15% polyester)
- 4mm crochet hook (a 5mm hook is used in the video for demonstration purposes only)
- Scissors
- Darning needle
- Stitch markers (optional, but recommended for beginners)
Band Pattern:
Chain 17 :
- (Create a slip knot and chain 17 stitches).
Row 1:
- Start in the second chain from the hook, work 16 single crochets (SC) across the chain.
Row 2-18:
- Chain 1 and turn. Work single crochets in the back loop only (BLO) for each stitch across (16 SC BLO).
Joining the Band:
- Align the last row with the starting chain and slip stitch them together under both loops of the last row and a single loop from the starting chain (16 slip stitches).
Shape the Mitt (Working on top of the Band):
For Row 1:
- Chain 1 and work 4 groups of (3 SC, 1 increase) across the tops of the band rows. This will give you a total of 22 SC.
Row 2:
- Chain 1 and turn, work 22 SC across.
Rows 3-9:
- Using the waistcoat stitch (work in between the "V" of the single crochet from the previous row), work 22 stitches across each row.
Decreases (Shaping the top of the Mitt):
Row 10:
- Work waistcoat stitch for 9 stitches, then waistcoat stitch 2 together (decrease). Repeat the sequence once more in the same row.
Row 11:
- Work 8 waistcoat stitches, followed by a decrease. Repeat the sequence once more.
- Continue decreasing in each row by doing one less waistcoat stitch before each decrease. Follow this pattern until you complete row 17, with 6 stitches at the end.
Closing the Mitt:
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing. Thread the darning needle with the tail.
- Weave the needle in and out through the remaining 6 stitches at the top, pull to gather and close the opening.
- Knot securely and weave in the end inside the mitt.
Weaving in the Ends:
- Turn the mitt inside out, thread your darning needle with the tail ends.
- Weave in the tails securely by running the needle under several stitches in one direction, then back in the opposite direction.
- Trim any excess yarn after the ends are woven in.
Finishing:
- Turn the mitt right side out.
- Repeat the process for the second mitten.
