Knit Mitten Pattern
With just yarn, needles, and a few simple tools, you can whip up a pair of mittens that are both comfy and stylish. Get your knitting gear out, and let’s get started on this fun project that’s perfect for chilly days!
Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn (Yarn Bee yarn ID brand in color oats mentioned)
- US size 6 (4mm) double pointed needles (DPNs)
- Darning needle
- Stitch markers
- Scissors
- Scrap yarn in a different color
Mitten Pattern:
Cuff:
- Cast on 32 stitches on one DPN for a size small/medium women's mitten.
- Distribute the stitches among three DPNs: 10 stitches on two needles and 12 stitches on one needle.
- Join in the round and work in a 1x1 rib (knit 1, purl 1) for 15 rounds for the cuff.
Hand:
- After completing the ribbing, knit every round for 6 rounds.
Thumb Gusset:
Start the increases for the thumb gusset:
Setup row: Knit 2, place marker, knit 3, place another marker, knit to end.
- Next round, increase for the thumb by making one right (M1R) after the first marker and make one left (M1L) before the second marker.
- Knit 2 plain rounds without increasing.
- Repeat the increase round followed by 2 plain rounds until there are 11 stitches between markers.
Thumb Opening:
- Place the 11 thumb stitches on scrap yarn and remove markers.
- Cast on 5 stitches using a backward loop method to compensate for the stitches you just removed.
Upper Hand:
- Continue knitting every round until the piece covers your little finger.
Decreases for the Top:
Begin decreasing for the mitten tip:
- Place one our stitches every other round as follows: knit two together, slip slip knit before and after the marker, until 10 stitches remain.
Closing the Mitten:
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining 10 stitches, pull tight, and weave in the end on the inside.
The Thumb:
- Return the 11 thumb gusset stitches to three DPNs.
- Pick up and knit 5 stitches over the gap created while moving the thumb stitches to scrap yarn.
- Knit every round until the thumb covers your entire thumb.
- Decrease by knitting two together around until you have few stitches left.
- Close up the thumb similarly by threading the tail through the remaining stitches and weaving in the ends.
Finishings:
- Weave in any loose ends.
- If necessary, use the tail at the thumb base to close any gaps.
This pattern produces a basic, versatile mitten suitable for small to medium-sized women's hands. For larger sizes or men's hands, adjustments to the number of stitches and rounds will be necessary.
