Foundation:

  • Chain 18 loops. Turn your work.

Row 1:

  • Starting from the second loop from the hook, make 18 single crochets (SC), marking the last SC with a marker for future reference. Chain 1, turn your work.

Total Rows:

  • Repeat until you've crocheted a piece that wraps comfortably around the head (78 rows for a 57-58 cm circumference, resulting in a 48 cm length).

Join the Ends:

  • Fold the band in half with the working thread on the inside.
  • Join the edges together by crocheting through the front loops of one side and the back loops of the other to create a seamless join.

Transition Row:

  • Change to double crochets, ensuring the number of stitches is a multiple of three.

Row 1:

  • Start with 2 chain stitches (counts as the first double crochet), followed by double crochets in each loop around.

Row 2-10:

  • Follow the waffle pattern by alternating front post double crochets and regular double crochets. The pattern is essentially [2 front post double crochets, 1 double crochet] repeat around. Note: The full pattern alternates these stitches across different rows to form the waffle texture.

Decrease for Crown

  • Begin decreases at row 11, reducing evenly around the hat. Follow the pattern of decrease, front post double crochet around.
  • Continue decreasing in subsequent odd-numbered rows (13, 15, etc.) until the hole is small enough to gather closed.

Finish the Hat

  • Thread the yarn through the remaining loops and pull tight to close the top of the hat.
  • Secure the end of the yarn on the inside of the hat.
  • Optionally, attach a pompom to the top.

Additional Tips:

  • Remember to use stitch markers to avoid losing your place.
  • Adjust hook size according to yarn thickness for comfortable handling and desired stitch tightness.
  • The described method for joining the elastic band and starting the main hat pattern ensures a neat and professional finish.
