Crochet Ruffles On Shorts Pattern
Materials Needed:
- A pair of shorts (already made)
- 4 mm crochet hook
- Yarn matching the shorts color
Setup:
- Turn your shorts to work from the back.
Attaching the Yarn:
- Jump two rows up from the edge of the shorts.
- Insert the crochet hook right above the second row.
- Loop your yarn on the hook and pull it through.
- Wrap yarn around the hook and pull through one loop, creating a base to start your ruffles.
Creating the Base Row:
- Continue to insert the hook into the top of the second row from the bottom.
- Work your way around the shorts in this manner.
- This creates a straight line as a foundation to attach your ruffles uniformly around the shorts.
Starting the Ruffles:
- After completing the base row around the shorts:
- Start the ruffles by making a double crochet (dc) stitch in the first stitch.
- Make one more double crochet in the same stitch (2 dc in the same stitch).
Continuing the Ruffles:
- Move to the second stitch.
- Make one double crochet in that stitch.
Creating the Ruffle Effect:
- Continue this pattern (2 dc in one stitch, 1 dc in the next) which will create a wavy or ruffled effect.
Building Up the Ruffles:
- Once the first row of ruffles is done, you can choose to add more rows by repeating step 7, but now working into the stitches of the previous row to build up the ruffles to your desired length.
For Additional Length:
- After finishing the increases (the 2 dc and 1 dc pattern), you can add extra rows of regular dc stitches (1 dc in each stitch) without increases to add length to your ruffles without further expanding them.
Finishing the Ruffles:
- Once you reach the desired length of your ruffles, you can finish off by creating a final row of regular dc stitches. For the tutorial, two rows were made for the bottom ruffles, and three rows were made higher up.
Remember to tailor the numbers of rows and stitches to the size of the shorts and the desired fullness of the ruffles. The yarn should be selected in accordance with the weight that works best for the project; not too heavy, so the ruffles are nicely defined and stand out.
