Materials:

  • Number 4 medium weight yarn
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook

Abbreviations:

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • dc – double crochet
  • sc – single crochet

Pattern:

1 Save

Round 1:

  • Start with a slip knot.
  • Chain (ch) 4.
  • Join with a sl st into the first ch to form a ring.
  • Chain 3 (counts as the first dc).
  • Work 12 more dc into the ring (total of 13 dc including the ch 3).
  • Pull on the yarn tail to tighten the center.

In Round 2:

  • Do not join rounds, use a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round.
  • Work 2 dc in the top of the ch 3 from the previous round.
  • Work 2 dc in each stitch around (total of 26 dc).

2 Save

Round 3:

  • Work 2 dc in the first stitch.
  • Work 1 dc in the next stitch.
  • Repeat the pattern (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in the following st) around (total of 39 dc).

Round 4:

  • Work 2 dc in the first stitch.
  • Work 1 dc in each of the next two stitches.
  • Repeat the pattern (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of the next two sts) around (total of 52 dc).

3 Save

For Round 5:

  • Work 2 dc in the first stitch.
  • Work 1 dc in each of the next three stitches.
  • Repeat the pattern (2 dc in next st, 1 dc in each of the next three sts) around (total of 65 dc).

Round 6: (Shell Stitches)

  • Skip two stitches.
  • Work 5 dc in the third stitch (shell stitch).
  • Skip two stitches, work 1 sc in next stitch.
  • Repeat the pattern (skip 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, skip 2 sts, 1 sc in next st) around, ending with shell stitch and two stitches left unworked.

4 Save

Round 7:

  • Using the middle dc of the 5-dc group, work 1 sc.
  • Find sc from previous round and work a shell stitch (5 dc) in that sc.
  • Repeat the pattern (work 1 sc in middle dc of shell, work 5 dc in sc from previous round) around.

After Rounds 8 to 13 (or 15):

  • Repeat the pattern from Round 7 for each round until desired size is achieved.

Round 14:

  • Work 1 sc in each stitch around.

5 Save

Rounds 15 to 17:

  • Continue working 1 sc in each stitch around for 3 rounds.
  • You may add more rounds for a longer brim if desired.

To Finish:

  • Slip stitch into the first stitch of the final round.
  • Chain 1 and cut the yarn.
  • Pull the yarn through and tighten to secure.
  • Weave in any yarn tails and the hat is finished.
