Crochet Mittens
Materials:
- J/5.75 mm crochet hook
- Premier Puzzle Yarn (Weight 5, 100% acrylic)
- Scissors
Mitten Pattern:
Cuff:
- Begin with a starting chain of 21 stitches and join to form a ring, being careful not to twist your chain.
- Chain 2 (this counts as the first double crochet here and throughout the pattern).
- Double crochet in each back bump of the chain around for a total of 20 double crochets (plus the chain 2).
- Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 2. Flip work inside out so you are working on the outside.
- Start the next round with a stack single crochet.
Alternate between front post double crochet and back post double crochet for the entire round (20 stitches). Join with a slip stitch to the top of the initial stack single crochet.
Body:
- For round 4, start with a stack single crochet and then place one double crochet in each stitch around (20 double crochets). Join with a slip stitch.
- Pull up a loop and set aside. Repeat rounds 1 through 4 for the second mitten.
Thumb Shaping:
Round 5:
- Start with a stack single crochet. Increase by placing two double crochets in the first stitch, two in the next, then one double crochet in each stitch around until you have only two stitches left. Place two double crochets in each of the last two stitches.
Rounds 6 and 7:
- Repeat the increase pattern from round 5 to expand the mitten for the thumb.
Divide for Thumb and Fingers:
- Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for working the thumb later.
- Join new yarn, counting six stitches from where the round finished. Attach new yarn with a slip stitch between the thumb and finger sections.
- Work in the round on just the finger portion, placing one double crochet in each stitch across (21 stitches).
- Work for a total of 5 rounds or until just the tips of your fingers are exposed.
- Decrease for the finger opening by double crocheting two together all the way around until 11 stitches remain.
- Close the top of the mitten with whip stitches and weave in the ends.
Thumb:
- Use the long tail to work the thumb, creating a small tube.
- Decrease at the desired point to close off the thumb.
- Weave in all ends.
