Super simple! The pistachio stitch involves making long loops using thick yarn and big needles. For the best results, grab a cotton or nylon blend yarn. If you're crafting something like a medium or large cardigan, go for size 10 and 11 needles.

  • Bulky yarn
  • Size 10 & 11 knitting needles
  • Enthusiasm to learn something fun!

Here are the steps to knit the Pistachio Stitch:

Cast on a number of stitches that is a multiple of 4 + 2 for the selvage stitches. The video casts on 26 stitches.

Knit a few rows in stockinette stitch. In stockinette stitch, knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches. The video knits two rows in stockinette stitch

4 Save

Knit 4 additional rows in knit stitch.

Row 1:

  • Slip the first stitch, knit 2, slip 1,purl 4, pass the slipped stitch over the purled stitches, knit 4. Repeat to end of row.

Row 2:

Slip the first stitch, purl 4, slip 1, knit 2, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitches, purl 4. Repeat to end of row.

5 Save

For Row 3:

  • Slip the first stitch, knit the first slipped stitch, knit 2, yarn forward, slip 1, knit 4, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitches, yo, knit 4. Repeat to end of row.

Row 4:

Purl all stitches.

3 Save

Row 5:

  • Slip the first stitch, knit 2, knit 2 together, sl 1, purl 4, pass the slipped stitch over the purled stitches, knit 4. Repeat to end of row. Note: In this row, the knit 2 together creates a hole, which is a characteristic of the Pistachio Stitch.

For Row 6:

1 Save

Slip the first stitch, purl 2, slip 1, knit 4, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitches, purl 4. Repeat to end of row.

Row 7:

Slip the first stitch, knit the first slipped stitch, knit 2, yarn forward, slip 1, knit 2, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitches, yo, knit 2. Repeat to end of row.

2 Save

Row 8:

  • Purl all stitches.

Repeat rows 5 through 8 for the pattern.
