Crochet Granny Square Pleated Bag
Materials:
- Milk cotton yarn in various colors (4 ply) - approximately 170g total
- Crochet hook size 3.5 mm
- Scissors
- Yarn needle
Granny Square:
- Start with a slip knot using your first color.
- Chain 6, connect to the first chain with a slip stitch to create a ring.
- Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), work two double crochets into the ring.
- Chain 2, work three double crochet into the ring.
- Repeat twice more to create four corners separated by chain 2 spaces.
- Connect to the top of chain 3 with a slip stitch.
- Chain 1, cut the yarn to change colors.
Join new color:
- Attach a new color with a slip knot.
- Work the pattern (3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets) in each corner.
- Work a chain 1 between corners.
- Connect to the top of the starting chain 3 with a slip stitch.
Continuation of Granny Squares:
- Continue adding rounds, creating the pattern (3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets) in corner spaces and (3 double crochets, chain 1) in the chain 1 spaces between the corner clusters from the previous round.
- Change colors as desired, creating five rounds per granny square.
Joining Granny Squares:
- After creating your granny squares with five rounds, make additional granny squares stopping at four rounds.
- Join the fifth round while connecting the squares together using a join-as-you-go method at the chain 2 corners and chain 1 spaces.
Creating the Pleats:
- Form pleats by adding a granny triangle in the middle of other granny squares.
- Attach the completed granny triangle between two granny squares, joining to the corners and sides with slip stitches.
Constructing The Bag:
- Join nine granny squares in sets of three in a row to create the front, back, and base of the bag.
- Fold the piece to form the base and sides, joining along the edges to shape the bag.
Top Border:
- Work a border along the bag's top edge with single crochets.
- Include chain spaces in the corners and join to the proceeding edge to maintain a smooth edge.
Straps:
- Create straps using the Romanian cord technique, which involves turning and working into loops to create a thick, sturdy cord.
- Measure and cut the straps to the desired length (e.g., 124 cm).
Finishing:
- Thread the straps through the corners of the granny squares near the pleats and secure.
- Sew the ends of the straps to the inside of the bag for sturdiness.
